Lately it's been real busy. There have been 5 trains a day running in each direction.
The most interesting feature may be that WC SD45's still rule the roost, as CN power
has displaced WC power throughout much of the WC system.
L-539, the Esky-Sawyer turn, is usually out of Escanaba around 7AM northbound.
Occassionally they run all the way to Partridge & back, but usually just Sawyer. Well,
they switch the pulpwood track at Sands too I guess. Anyway, they run Monday-
Friday with 1 engine usually. Back into Escanaba mid-late afternoon.
SORE 1 is the next northbound, leaving about 10AM. They're usually the
"Miscellaneous Road Freight" of the UP (in Missabe terms). Handles the Tilden-Soo all-
rail ore, usually other interchange cars for the LS & I, cars for Ishpeming job, and
usually a cut of Empire-Esky ore. They leave Esky 10AMish. They are around your
neck on the woods in the early-mid afternoon, and back into Esky in the evening.
SORE 2 is the mid-afternoon train out of Esky, usually handles just Empire-Escanaba
ore.
SORE 3 is a late evening/night departure from Escanaba, and is back into Esky early
morning, usually after dawn. They usually carry the Empire limestone northbound from
the C. Reiss dock in Esky, and ore pellets south.
SORE 4 departs Escanaba northbound at night, and is back southbound into Esky in
morning. Empire-Escanaba ore pellets usually.
Lately there has been a train called L-549; basically the Ishpeming job running 1-way
to Escanaba on Saturday, then back to Ishpeming Sunday, switching Sawyer on the
way too.
I've seen any train handle and do anything, though. Like SORE 1 running to Ishpeming
& back from Partridge to set-out an engine, or SORE 3 bringing cars to Lousiana-
Pacific at Sawyer. But the above is the typical (if there is such a thing) day.
