Many photo opportunities are available in Grand Rapids. With five different rail companies in the area, it can provide for many different types of shots. The predominant traffic is made by CSX. They have a major yard called Wyoming Yard, located on their mainline between downtown Grand Rapids and Grandville. Many yard jobs can be seen throughout the day from a great location, called Judd St. A picnic table has even been purnished for railfan use. For information on train schedules, see below.
Canadian Pacific has trackage rights on CSX through town. Many run-throughs can be seen throughout the day.
Norfolk Southern operates a yard just east of US-131 between Burton and Hall St. There are a couple of yard jobs, including a run between Wyoming Yard and back, along with a trip to Ann St for interchange with Grand Rapids Eastern. Two freight runs are made, both are to and from Elkhart Indiana. Runs are NS 36E and NS 37E.
Grand Rapids Eastern (GRE) also makes an appearance in Grand Rapids, serving the area between Coopersville and Ionia, with their interchange area at Ann St.
Amtrak can be seen twice a day, with the Pere Marquette #370 and #371. These runs go from Grand Rapids to Chicago and back, following the CSX mainline towards Holland.
