Re: Grand Elk opinions?

If there are any unit trains they're probably something other than corn or maybe from Mason Mason is NO WHERE near as big as it would need to be to produce unit trains. It's just your ordinary small town elevator with a little spur, not a huge silo complex such as the Anderson's facility at Albion....

Re: GTW/CN Santa Train

I kinda feel stupid for not knowing this but what is the Santa train and what line does it run on? Flint sub?? Thanks guys! Look at the pictures! Three-car passenger train powered by IC E9As 100 and 101. It spends about a week on the GTW mainlines in this state visiting most of the major yards. At ...

Re: GTW/CN Santa Train

Try standing up on a bridge for 30 minutes...no car, MORE wind and very few layers... But sometimes it's worth the effort... :) http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=264772&nseq=1 One more thing...if in doubt, look at the CN location update. I HIGHLY doubt that CN_Okemos or the Detroit guys w...

Re: GTW/CN Santa Train

The schedule typically isn't released until late November/Early December. I'm sure that when or IF it does come out, it will definitely be posted here or at Michiganrailroads.com. I say IF because the train ALMOST didn't run last year...it had actually been cancelled and then, after some heavy press...

Re: Early Blue Water power & consist?

The E-units and heritage cars were used during the first year or two of operation along with the French Turboliners purchased during this period. At some point, I want to say 1976 or 1977, the Turboliners started operating on the train exclusively and the E's vanished. Here's a 1980 photo at East La...

Re: CSX GRE MQT Train Location Update 10/28/09

We were pacing D700 out of Holland yesterday afternoon - just east of Zeeland I snapped a picture and a second later a truck pulled on to the crossing at 76th Ave. right in front of them and got hit! Train Master was on board - we stopped to phone 911 - then we went around the train to get to the o...

Re: Amtrak North Coast Hiawatha & Pennsylvanian studies released

I believe that Amtrak would be better off reinstating trains such as the Desert Wind, which operated from Los Angeles, California to Ogden, Utah until 1997. Las Vegas would provide more income to Amtrak than a stop in Bismarck, North Dakota would. That's the concensus I'm seeing elsewhere too. I th...

Thanks for all these updates guys. Saw 4625 in Battle Creek this past Saturday. Lansing has the 4917 as the yard/local unit at the moment. Both are still wearing their blue coats. :)

Re: Kalamazoo Report 10-24-09

probably inbound cars from Elkhart. Yup. I was on 365 that morning and we met the inbound right at BO as we arrived in town, so those cars had to be them. At the east end of the yard, the LC Howard siding door was closed, but their siding's rails were shiny. I noticed that as well. The tracks by th...

Re: Marquette Rail

There is still a track left inside that stall, if I'm not mistaken. There might still be a pit in that stall too, although I'm not 100% sure on that. Nice to see them expanding into it! That roundhouse has certainly been put to good use over the last few years. :)

What is this?

This was posted by "Ben" on the Michganrailroads.com history board...anyone have an idea what it is?? Even the great Doktor was stumped on the other board... I don't have a clue either, but I'm REALLY curious to know myself, so I'm hoping someone here has an idea. This was apparently at North Yard i...

Re: CN Updates 10/18/09 to 10/24/09

Not really an update anymore, but Amtrak 365 will have yet another cabbage on the point tomorrow morning. 90225 brought up the markers on 364 tonight, with 35 and five cars leading the way east from track 28 in Chicago Union Station. We were completely on time until Lansing, when we briefly got stuc...

Re: CSX MI Train Location Update 10-23-09

371 will have some type of lounge or cafe on the rear today. Should have been AMTK 58000, a Horizon Dinnette. The car is pretty fresh as it was just released from Beech Grove. Due to the delays incurred as a result of the UP derailment in Chicago yesterday, there evidently wasn't time for 365 and 3...

Re: CN Orders New Units

I have an old copy of Railnews magazine from around 1996 or 1997 that gives CN's exact reasoning for opting out of the, then-budding, AC power race. I believe it had something to do with AC traction helping on steep mountainous grades with long trains and CN not having that difficult of a railroad ...

Don, And I think SD70's are in the 5600 series Confirmation: CN 5600-5625 - SD70I CN 5626-5800 - SD75I Russ, Can HotBox detectors be picked up on a scanner? If so, what frequency? Do you need a digital scanner? All detectors transmit over the same road frequencies used by regular operating crews. So...
