target steel is the facilities first customer
oh cool, I missed that.

I always wondered why they never went with full rail service being they have such close proximity to a pretty big hub and 2 railroads. Seems like a no brainer to build a short spur that goes into their property.

Re: Flat Rock Yard...rebirth? sort of

The irony is there are a pair of steel processing plants at the north end of the yard that had their spurs taken out recently. Neither received much service that I know of in the short time the spurs were there. There’s also Target steel literally right next door that sees a good amount of truck tr...

Where in the yard property is this new building/transload operation? South end of the yard, south of the Vreeland Rd. grade crossing. Hasn’t been much activity yet. Ahh, ok, thanks for this. I rarely get to this part of the state anymore but can picture exactly where this is. Did they construct a n...

Here are some photos of the steel transload building for Target Steel at Flat Rock: steeltransload1.JPG steeltransload2.JPG Photos from David "Woody" Woodruff's LinkedIn (Assistant Vice President & Head of U.S. Public and Government Affairs for CN). Pretty wild that they used a pair of M-2’s to swi...

Very cool. I drive by there pretty regularly. That’s an operation I’ve been wanting to catch for years.

And yes, Eureka is south of there

Satellite views shows the vehicle transloading ramps in the Flat Rock area with little activity yet the daily Flat Rock trains have a lot of loaded Bi and Tri levels. Ford Dearborn Assembly must account for many of the Bi’s but where are the other vehicle racks getting loaded? Presumably at Flat Ro...

E&LS SD40-2 503 went on the ground Monday or Tuesday in Stiles, WI. That may be in the same location where they had a large grain train derailment last year.
Man, they have a shoestring maintenance budget up there, don’t they?

Re: Elimination of NS 256/255 in June?

Something to consider too. The Moroun family owns the former McLouth steel land in Trenton and currently has a “railroad” company that recently reinstalled the crossing over W. Jefferson last summer. They’ve floated out the possibility of having some kind of intermodal terminal there, which NS would...

I’m not sure, there’s a few non-operational locomotives. I’ll have to ask

Don’t remember if it’s been posted here or not, but Charlotte Southern #3, the final GE 44 Tonner built, has been sold to the Southern Michigan Railroad Society.
For those keeping score at home, that makes 3 operational we have.
