Re: Homer mystery

Well the guy has a way of exaggerating his stories and most of them I think involve alcohol so it is not the most reliable source. Probably somebodies old farm truck parked under it and he thought it had to be a loco. Before he came to work here he worked at the Ethanol plant in Albion, me thinks he...

Homer mystery

So a guy at work is telling me of a tale of an abandoned locomotive out West of Homer on the old Air Line. From Google Maps you can see a structure there at 42.131212, -84.846311. From his description it sounds like an old grain mill or mine load-out facility. There are no roads near the location so...

Re: Cherry Growers in Grawn has shut down

Low rent warehouse space as is the case with many a former factory. That is until the roof starts leaking so bad that there are no dry spots left. By that time rot sets in and then the track hoe comes in to rip it down and extract the metal. Until finally all that is left is a concrete pad with weed...

Re: First look at the new Siemens coaches

Not only all that but they would also have to be hauled in by flat car or by truck as they would not be interchangeable on the US rail system. That is not a small shipping bill to add on at the end of the order.

Re: Ex-railroad worker cuts crossing signal wires in BC

Wow that will get you 20 years?? When we were kids we would stretch the long bonding wires over the track so that the train would cut them as they went past. We just thought it was funny being bored pre-teen farm kids. I mean I never did it, it was the kids I hung around with, those bad kids from do...

Amazing the kid wasn't hurt from the 10ft fall. The "Shatner 2000" wig appears to be brand new in the video. Engine appears to be OMLX 1751, although that is an SD9 and unit looks more like a GP

I try to only fly in the corporate turboprop when I can. Only 9 seats but those pilots will fly in any weather, we load up in a heated hanger no TSA open the doors and go.

Re: Air Pressure

In the past pressures were indeed lower. Don't quote me on dates but at one time passenger was 90 and freight was 75-80, I think sometime before the 50's perhaps back in the 30's. A lot of older switcher locomotives will not go above 90 PSI on the brake pipe without modifications to the brake valves...

Re: Amtrak 501 derails 12/18/2017

Interesting that the lead loco showed 78 and the trailing locomotive showed 80 at time of derailment. I know 2mph isn't significant at that speed, in this particular situation, but...a discrepancy like that suggests other discrepancies may eventually come to light as well. Lead unit had independent...

Re: Amtrak 501 derails 12/18/2017

2 of them were damaged on the Pere Marquette. 4619 and I believe 4617. Both were taken out of service after they were used to clear fallen trees from the rails. That's gold right there. Gold. Tree trimming with a loco, been there done that. Although it is a little less violent at 8mph vs 80mp...

Re: CSX dispatchers to Jacksonville - delays

The biggest pattern I have seen is foamers posting incorrect information on why the center in Jacksonville was decentralized. Your post follows that pattern.
No foam here buddy I spend plenty of time hanging off the back of a train and pullin pins.

Re: Amtrak 501 derails 12/18/2017

Have to wonder about that lightweight Talgo equipment as well, those things are around 25 years old IIRC. I remember driving to Fostoria to photograph them at the station as a teen, when they came through on a demo run. It could be that the tilting function malfunctioned in the curve, and bang over ...

Re: CSX dispatchers to Jacksonville - delays

First they were all in Florida then there were too many problems with dispatchers not knowing the territories they dispatched and having to shut down for hurricanes and such. So they sent them all away and decentralized them. Now they want to cut costs and centralize them again but wait, this time t...
