Re: Beware of Mr. Roof!

GaRRy: I showed this to some professional roofers here at work, and it's unaimous---Mr. Roof is hosing you. I think the suggestion about checking with the Livonia inspector is spot on. Ask to see a copy of the inspection report, and check if the contractor ever pulled a permit, if they were required...

Re: Different takes on RR lettering

Anyone remember the ill-fated proposed merger of Santa Fe and Southern Pacific back in the 1980's? Before the merger was finalized, a new paint scheme and "SPSF" lettering were applied to some engines. When the merger deal fell through, some folks were referring to the 'SPSF' as S houldn't P aint S ...

Re: Micheal Jackson Dead

If Michael Jackson jokes offend you, stop reading this.

Jackson's college Alma Mater is hosting a tribute for the self-proclaimed King Of Pop.

Which college?

(You know it's coming...)

Bringem' Young, of course.

Granted. But the Penguin meat is spoiled, and they puke all over the ref's seeing-eye dog. Then they clean up the mess with Crysby and Malkin's jerseys.

I wish NBC announcer Pierre McGuire finally gets that date with Sidney Crosby he's been hoping for.

Re: "Strange happenings" while railfanning?

I was east of Durand waiting to get a shot of an eastbound on a beastly hot day around 15 years ago. I don't remember the dirt road I was on, but I was parked off to the side near the crossing, patiently waiting for the train to show up. There was a STOP sign at the tracks and every time a driver st...

Re: Crazy Things You've Done While Railfanning

Back in 1985, I was visiting Marquette after having moved a way for a couple of years, and I caught an LS&I Hill Job leaving Marquette at the County Road 550 crossing. Those of you who have 'fanned the LS&I know that you can beat the train to Forestville from there, if you fly . And fly I did, windi...

What is the difference between turbocharging and a roots blower? Jim, "Roots" is a brand name. Their blowers are gear driven from the engine, and provide the pressurized intake air that a two-stroke diesel needs to operate properly. Sometimes this is referred to as "Normal aspiration". A four-strok...

Great shots, Chris!
Those "boxcar" remains near 550 are actually one of the old wood cabooses from what I've heard.

C'mon guys...We're talking about the possibility of a little rain. Think positive---Maybe less-than-ideal weather will bring out more trains.
Unless it's raining anvils, I'll be there!

I think Bruce Springsteen said it best...
"...Glory Days..."

That black Alco smoke against the blue sky always reminded me of that scene in The Wizard Of Oz.

"...Dorothy? Who's Dorothy?"

Mike, I think that refers to new federally mandated emissions standards. I think they take affect in a year or two, and all diesels will need to meet them.
Anyone else? Is that close?

Not so any more, PC. Eagle Mills yard and West yard at Presque Isle are now completely fenced in and gated. I'm not sure if they are even issuing "passes" any more. You'd have to get through the gate for access to the yard tower to request a pass. Obviously, places like Empire/Eagle Mills/Partridge ...

I don't think things are frozen yet. Some years, even after the locks freeze, shipments to Algoma Steel in the Canadian Soo can go on quite long into the winter. (I don't think boats need to use the locks to get from Marquette/Duluth to the Algoma plant)

Busy Times On The LS&I

I got a phone call last week from a friend who works on the LS&I. He said there were two boats at the dock, and two more at anchor waiting to get in. They were running a "Double Dock"--- two crews working the dock at the same time! They were doing well until an engine failure left one crew under-pow...
