Re: GM in Saginaw

IIRC, three foundries were running...Grey Iron (still there) Nodular Iron, and Malleable Iron---both gone. There were a couple of assembly plants (not sure of the names, but they might have been referred to by numbers) on Niagara Street by the river on the West side where Thompson BallScrew (or what...

Re: The S.S. Badger at sunset

Excellent photos!
I also like how the photos 'tell the story' of the Badger setting off on a voyage...because there will come a time when that no longer happens. But for now, wow!...Next best thing to being there!

Good thing you didn't leave it in Saginaw.

Seriously...glad you got it back, Kerry.

Re: More Old Photos

Steve, that is the old steel ore dock approach trestle that ran through downtown Marquette. The Soo (ex-DSS&A) line between the lower yard, upper yard/shops/points west followed it at ground level. The shot of #23 (someone in my family took it) is from when I worked on the M&HM, and we had the engin...

More Old Photos

First off, thanks to Zack (And Mrs. Zack) for coming up with the idea of posting "first" photos in another thread on this board. I was digging through some old stuff and located some 110 "Pocket Instamatic" photos from way back. Since the image quality was nowhere near that of 35mm and digital photo...

In the video, "Alcos, Iron Ore and More" (1985) Boyd did an enthusiastic narration that made it seem like he was in the room with you.
RIP, Mr. Boyd.

This first shot is one of the oldest I could find---Soo Line's ex-DSS&A roundhouse in Marquette, 1974. Cropping skills were tough to hone for a 12-yr old with a 110 camera. http://railroadfan.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10132/MQT_74.jpg This shot is the same power getting ready to leave the Lower Ya...

Re: For all you huskies out there!

Tech and Northern (NMU, or enema-U) used to have some good games in Marquette and Houghton back in the '80's. Regardless of how well they were playing in the season, that was always a great rivalry, too. (I'm a life-long hockey fan, and am going to see the Wings play the Flyers at The Joe Sunday) Be...

Geat shot, KC! I always think about 'continuity' when I see those GP35's...Those engines ran countless miles under the flag of the Ann Arbor...riding on trucks of the FA's they replaced...which were the engines that replaced steam!
Very cool!

Frank--- So sorry about your Dad. I don't believe you and I have ever met, but I met your Dad at Durand, and it was a pleasure chatting with him. That was a few years back, and it may have been shortlly after you joined the military...but regardless, he spoke very proudly of your military service. W...

A blonde is in a hurry, and rushes into a dry cleaner's shop in the hopes that they can get her favorite sweater cleaned before a big date that evening. She breathlessly asks the shop owner, "Can you get this cleaned for me by the end of the day?" She blurted out the question so quickly, the guy did...

Re: RIP Deadliest Catch.

I always liked that show----bummer that it's going away, or at least the crews apparently are. But maybe it's better to go out now than beat it to death and "jump the shark". Not to be morbid or anything, but from a purely documentary standpoint, how rare is it to be able to show something like Capt...

Re: Ore dock question

In the days before pelletized ore, different grades of crude ore from various mines were mixed in the dock pockets according to steel mill requirements. This must have required a pantsload of switching and spotting. Much of the crude ore was 'sticky' and that was only made worse in freezing weather....

...I'd say it's one of the best books ever produced pertaining to MI Railroads. I agree whole-heartedly with Jon. The content alone would make a Michigan railfan (especially one who has an interest in the 1960's to 1980's era) go weak in the knees, even if the photos were scattered on a cheap card ...

Re: What's goin on in Durand?

While I've never done the overnight thing, I get to Durand (from Saginaw) fairly frequently on Saturdays as well as stopping by the depot any time I'm in the area. As to current traffic levels, there have always been lulls in traffic as well as fairly busy times in the 25+ years I have been frequent...
