Re: Detroit-Grand Rapids Amtrak

Coming up to modern times, yes the C&O is a great ROW, good track, CTC but the freeway is still there and is there really a need for a route from Grand Rapids to Detroit? Even Detroit-Lansing, is there really a need for this service? And who is going to pay for it? KenB Well, I have to believe that...

Detroit-Grand Rapids Amtrak

I am slightly puzzled by Amtrak's current Blue Water service. Port Huron to Chicago seems like an odd route to me, especially when one considers that there is no service from Detroit to Grand Rapids. If the Blue Water train were eliminated, the largest (in terms of ridership) station closed would be...

Any idea where they derailed? On a siding? On the main?

I can't believe that there are three hour investigations for bovine fatalities. Shows how ridiculous so many things are in this day and age.

Amtrak Chicago Line Delays

I have been thinking about Amtrak's route into Chicago from Michigan, and am wondering about all of the delays that they seem to be constantly experiencing between Porter and Chicago. Is there anyone on this site who knows more about these delays? Do they occur at certain points or all over the line...

Do you have any idea how these work? Is participation (actual contribution) required, or can one just go as an observer? There's one in my area very soon.

Re: Michigan senate chooses car culture again

Amtrak has indicated that at some point in the near future, they will no longer absorb the losses on corridor trains, putting the entire subsidy on the states that host these trains. I-94 gets millions of dollars every year from the highway trust fund, and the Michigan Line gets ZERO federal aid? T...

Re: Michigan senate chooses car culture again

And, on the Chicago-Detroit (Pontiac) cooridor, do we really need 135 MPH+ trains, or do we just need MORE FREQUENCY of trains? I seem to remember the airlines advertising "Chicago - Departures every hour on the hour." I'd like to see on time arrivals in the 90%+ range too Well, AARR, for that to h...

Is demanded ridership high enough to add cars to the wolverines? If so, I have a major bone to pick with whoever appropriates the funding to Amtrak.

Re: AMTRAK Re-Route!! Good Day

It seems like, since Amtrak first re-routed three days' worth of Capitol and Lake Shore Limiteds through Michigan back in Feb. of 2007, this route has worked out rather well for them. I wonder how the Wabash re-route worked out for 30 and 48 yesterday? This route would allow for more station stops ...

I guess that is actually a pretty good rule of thumb, as limited speed is the only exception. Sorry for exaggurating a little there.

Re: Are these speed signals?

On CN's GTW line (Holly sub), I've noticed 3 single lens searchlight style signals in a vertical line (ie above each other), 1 set of 3 signals per track. I will (try to) attach a photo later. I've read somewhere that this was speed signaling as opposed to route signaling. The top one was for the f...

Re: Moscow driving

I believe that Moscow has the largest subway system in terms of both ridership and length. I'm glad most people there use that mode of transport instead. I know I would if I were there, due to both cost and....this. On another note, you could probably make a "highlight reel" video like this for ever...

I think they're the first two cars for Silgan in Ottawa. I don't know which way the switch faces to the new spur, but the same consist came through Columbus Grove southbound. I don't know if they ran around them there so that they could shove them into the spur, or if the cars were not for Ottawa a...

Re: Derailment in downtown Wauseon, OH

I still maintain that the overall tonnage on the Willard Sub is higher than that of the Toledo East and Toledo West districts, due to more loaded freight trains and powder river coal. On average on a typical 8-hour log, I've had a minimum 2 or 3 PRB coal every time. The tracks are visibly beat up m...

Re: Derailment in downtown Wauseon, OH

Yeah, I think that 80 trains per day is a bit high for both lines. I would say more like 55-60 on the NS and 45-50 on the B&O from what I saw through Deshler. Then again, some people claim that the CN mainline through michigan sees 25 trains per day, which is totally off base. Once again, maybe I'm ...
