Auto racks
Sitting around at breakfast we came upon a question--we know where autoracks are loaded, can not recall seeing any pictures or locations where they are unloaded. Like in the Chicago area or Detroit?

Does the Grand Elk employ any form of police? Now don't get too excited but it would be possible to hop the train going north to GR and get off as it slows going into the yard, or by 28th street; or vice versa. Keep your hats on,we all know the legal issues involved!!!

Driving along Stadium Dr saw a Amtrak passenger train mozing along at 2:15 heading west. Last two cars said Federal Railway Admin--very shiny SS with large picture windows on the rear end car. Does not show-up on the Dixie site; obviously some special train.

Back in 1968 I worked putting a 5 foot sewer line from Scott Paper to the Detroit Sewage Treatment facility (under Jefferson Ave.is the Main Interceptor for Detroit--32 feet in diameter of raw sewage!) If you look on Google Maps just to the SW of the air photo in the article there is a single track ...

Michigan railroads use of engines
Anytime I see some pictures posted, there are always (mostly) two engines pulling less than ten cars! My brother-in-law worked the C&O out of Ludington for 40 years; he said the engines were not that reliable back then. They would break down out in the "boonies" and have to wait for a rescue engine-...

Fueling NS in Chicago
Driving on the Skyway road as it approached the Dan Ryan, I saw a tanker truck fueling a set of NS road engines. This was near the container/trailer loading yard along the Skyway, this is the first time I have seen this (I finally saw a plane leave the Gary airport--what a day). Anyways ,where does ...

Amtrak horn
Saturday I rode the Wolverine 358 to KAL from CHI. After leaving Union Station and over the Chicago River, we were passing a stopped container train (really long). The engineer was tapping the horn as we went by it. Was there a specific reason for this? Was he warning anyone that a train was passing...

Am I reading this correctly----four engines to pull a mess of empties. This must be a group of "junkers" to finish the run, or just incase a few of them break down

Used railroad ties
Along the Indiana Tollway -southside-before Gary there is the company that has stacks of usable ties and an increasing stack of junk tie area, and rail lengths. Under the Skyway bridge on the westside of the river, Amtrak slows down for the lift bridge is a small operation that appears to be grindin...

Why would they be stopping for Customs? Wouldn't the manifest be all done from RR offices by computer? All truckers carry the manifest copy that is furnished by the shipping agent or trucking company--if something is wrong they are refused entry and go back to the shipper or agent for correction. Ar...

I rode the 352 back to Kazoo this evening--left the Windy 1.25 hours late due to the 351/365 being late into the Windy. Initially Amtrak said the 351 hit a snowplow and the 365 was coupled to it and brought it to the Windy????Later announcement said someone had mechanical issues. 352 got back to Kaz...

Railroad and shipping container question
Some shipping containers are refrigerated, on the ship and on the train. I was driving down the Chicago Skyway freeway and noticed a line of containers waiting to enter the yard; a string of them were refrigerated, just like over the road reefers. These were NOT trailers, but containers, from the ea...
