Re: I-55 Rail Corridor

To answer two of your other questions, above Bloomington its UP's Joliet sub and the Springfield sub below.

The line is busiest above Joliet, slowly getting busier the further south you go, especially below Alton.

Notice I didn't touch on any of the myriad of lines that cross at grade.

Re: I-55 Rail Corridor

Springfield to St.Louis is a bit more complicated, and far from my area of expertise. Don't take this post as gospel, and I welcome fact checking ( ...paging BN13148). With buying the SP, UP had two parallel routes from (roughly) Springfield into E.St.Louis, and has rationalized the south end of the...

Re: I-55 Rail Corridor

Interestingly, when SP bought the line, it came with an intermodal yard. The IMX yard was in the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago, currently an empty field near Damen and the canal, as UP closed it in the late 90's. A few years later UP built the Global 4 intermodal yard southwest of Joliet, near ...

Re: Indiana RR operations around Linton, IN?

Thank you so much for the reply and the info! We will be traveling to Indianapolis Saturday morning, then heading south from there. So our goal will probably be to catch the SAHW leaving town, and follow it south, that way we can get the shot of it on Tulip Trestle on the way to Bloomington. No pro...

Re: Indiana RR operations around Linton, IN?

Here's the long story: East of Linton, track speeds are now up to 40mph. I hear the loaded coal heading to Indianapolis 2-3 times a week in the mornings, about 8am thru Bloomington. I’m not entirely sure when the empties run, I’d guess at roughly the same time or a bit earlier. As to the manifest wi...

Re: Indiana RR operations around Linton, IN?

The short story is on weekends the INRD tends run the stacks a few hours earlier than on weekdays, and to my perception the SAHW only runs on Saturday mornings (I see it in westbound through Bloomington 11am-1pm) and the HWSA only runs on Sunday afternoons (maybe 5-7pm eastbound thru Bloomington).

Re: BNSF line toward Paducah Kentucky

I believe there are a pair of locals out of Centralia, one south to Paducah, the other north... to Beardstown? UP has trackage rights over BNSF/CN from a little south of Marion,Il to the PAL at Paducah, mainly Colorado coal going to the barge dumpers at Beaver Dam. There's also a pair of large power...

Re: Savannah GA.

As far as the Georgia Central goes, last year i watched the Y115 local bring woodchips into Savannah, crossing Alabama Junction at sunrise. It went straight to the mill by the river and then came back to the yard. That day it built the road train, which departed around 3pm. The road train L783 ran w...

The first southbound traditionally leaves Jacksonville at 2:30pm, so through Daytona roughly at 4. The next will be a few hours later. There'll be a few northbounds strangling north in the morning, and generally one in afternoon. There is local in St.Augustine that the road trains have to pass, i'm ...

Re: TP&W

If there is a schedule, it's been changed and tweaked often enough lately to appear otherwise. Remington was leased to GE for windmill unloading and a new yard built on the state line in Effner,IN. Road trains between Effner and Peoria tend to run at night 2-3 times a week, sometimes at night there'...

Re: Fort Wayne passenger service floated, again

Driving has gone down in MI due to losing a million people in population in the last dacade A quick look at the US Census numbers shows that Michigan dropped from a population of 9,938,444 in the year 2000 to 9,883,640 in 2010, a −0.6% drop. Until we give up the freedom of our personal autos, then ...

Re: Florida FEC vacation

There are two daytime southbounds out of Jacksonville, the 101 at 12:30pm and the 107 at 6pm. Figure 2-3-ish and 7:30-8:30ish for Daytona. There are more overnight. The tail end of the northbound fleet should be rolling through in the morning: i'd guess the 224 will come through Daytona at 6am, 226 ...

On NS's West Virginia Secondary there is the 380+381 pair between Columbus and Dickinson,WV. They tend to meet in the late evening a bit northwest of the flood warning area (i can't remember off the top of my head the name of the usual siding). There's also a few coal trains each week that ply the l...

Re: Where to train watch in Boston.

As far as Boston proper, there are still a few freight quirks there. CSX still runs a local from Framingham to Chelsea and back, spurring off the now commuter mains a hair east of Beacon Park and the then runs slowly by MIT in Cambridge thru Somerville to the produce docks in Chelsea. Also there's a...

i wouldn't exactly call Palmer "hot", but it is a neat place. In addition to the NEC+CSX, there's also the Mass. Central (which used to get an 8am start) and Amtrak (the Vermonter has do a funny back-up move from there to Springfield). Amusingly the old depot at the diamond is now a restaurant calle...
