Re: Ex TSBY 1997 on the move

And wouldn’t it be more economical just to put a real bumper post in? GLC 392 is now filling in as the bumping post in Farwell Why do they need a bumping post at Lear? Technically the cheapest option "most economical" is whatever mass you have sitting around. Dirt, concrete blocks, etc. In this cas...

Wasn't sure how to route them? Geee, CSX or what? GET OUT A FRIGGEN MAP! LSRC for the Flint to Detroit job may be app pro po....but thats just me. Yard clogged in Rouge. Start calling an extra or two to have them switched out in GRR. Wait...crews? Extra? Nevermind. You know the answer... It isn't c...

Re: The Floridian - Amtrak's New (Temporary) Train

Plus the unspoken truth that Amtrak is trying to save Superliners for the western Long Distance trains with this move as well, since they’ve woefully failed to maintain enough equipment to meet todays surging demand, let alone pre-pandemic train lengths. This train will run with single-level equipme...

How about people like you stop being weird about constructive suggestions like this? How about people like you figure out how to use the quote feature? The whole Amtrak from GRR to CHI via Kzoo topic has been discussed ad nauseum on here before. It's a terrible idea that abandons HOM, BAM and SJM, ...

Re: Kzoo looks to close 3 crossings, move railyard

It's a dumb, horrible idea. How about Kalamazoo to Traverse City? I agree. While moving the railyard would qualify as a "fantasy" plan and lesser improvements (such as a NE connection on the diamond) are close to fantasy land the oft discussed fantasy passenger rail plans are just distractio...

Re: Kzoo looks to close 3 crossings, move railyard

I have no objection to the Pere Marquette route. But it misses the high speed corridor where most of the state and federal dollars will go. And The Gun Lake Tribe is building a city between GR and Kalamazoo. I think the two routes could complement each other. It is only money! Yeah, they spent all ...

Re: Hamilton Northwestern Railroad Co.

Is what I really wonder is why they started running their engines nose to nose instead of back to back like they were. To piss off railfans. It makes some of us happy… nose to nose was the preferred practice for the Soo Line in Minneapolis-St. Paul in the early 90s and us old folks get nostalgic. P...

Let's not forget lesser known composite ties. Strangely, there are composite ties in Boardman Yard in Traverse City of all places! Saw them this spring when GLC MOW was working on a switch. I asked them what they were as they looked like model railroad ties (very black). They said MDOT got a batch ...

Re: Autorack branding? Noob question

Someone will undoubtedly correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that the cars are owned by TTX (Trailer Train Corporation) and the racks are owned by the railroad whose logo is on the rack. TTX is owned by a group of railroads. The autoracks with flatcar bases that have the name/reporting...

Re: Concrete vs Wood

The main determinations are tonnage, curvature and ease of maintenance. Switching wood to concrete requires changing every single tie, so it is a massive up-front cost that needs to be justified. You'll typically see lines converted to concrete or laid with it in areas with exceptionally high tonnag...
