Re: Amtrak Baggage cars on Wolverine trains

Are the cabbages permenatly gone from the Pere Marquette now? :? Not necessarily. 90413 was still being used into May while others had been stored. We'll have to wait and see if one returns at some point. At the present time, the Hiawathas are still using several. EDIT: 90200, 90224 and 90413 are a...

Re: Amtrak Baggage cars on Wolverine trains

So then all the NPCUs are off the michigan Wolverine route? I liked seeing those. GONE. They do have ITCS but cannot go 110mph from what I understand they can only go up to 90 A couple things: 1. All in-service baggage cars on the system right now CAN reach 110mph and can go even higher sti...

Re: ATSF 4-6-4 @ 130mph? Wow!

The 3463 was designed for high speed. It has 84-inch drivers, which are essentially as big as the wheels got. Even with a standard restoration, I'm sure it could EASILY top LNER 4468 "Mallard" 's 126mph record and attain a speed of 130mph. If these modifications are done correctly and modern improve...

CSX Train Location Updates - 5-29-12

As previously reported in yesterday's thread, Marquette ran a Z151-28 into Grand Rapids to pick up the latest windmill train. Said train is now passing Watson Street Interlocking at about 5mph with the 3001 solo. The train appears to be entirely mast pieces.

Re: CSX Train Location Updates 5/27/12

MQT already went north with what I'm guessing was 2005 in the lead, assuming it still has Wayne's M5. This was around noon. I did not hear them come south, which is what they would normally be doing at noon. No idea if they're bringing another movement south for this or left power at Wyoming. Good l...

Re: CSX Train Location Update 5-14-12

Ah, we have another maintenance window affecting Amtrak again? Checking the reservation site shows the schedule change only for today and tomorrow. A friend of mine currently living along the Grand Rapids Terminal was very surprised when they passed by around 6:20am, waking him up. Both of us are c...

Re: New Amtrak timetable effective 5/7/2012

I heard about the Lansing "complainers" regarding 364-364 and Business Class, or lack thereof. Personally, I'm cheesed-off that the Superliners were pulled from the Bluewater. Biz class is consistently sold-out, and then you're in for a "treat" riding the Horizon coaches. At least with the bi-level...

Re: New Amtrak timetable effective 5/7/2012

Okay, a couple of things: 1. For Jim and Jon, Nathan brought up the important point about the second Pere Marquette. That would entirely contingent on the state of Michigan increasing the subsidy for this service. There is no way that Amtrak is going to touch that on their own in this state of congr...

Re: NS/NKP 765 Trips- Employee Appreciation

Just to clarify, the dates most on this site will be concerned with are July 14-15th (Lake Division) and 28-29th (Dearborn Division). The Lake Division includes the former NKP mainline from Chicago to Fort Wayne and on to Bellevue as well as the ex-Wabash main from Fort Wayne to Detroit. The Dearbor...

Re: Amtrak's plan for current equipment

A little food for thought regarding the P42s: While the newest 100 are only ten years old, they see more service and wear every year than any other type of locomotive on any railroad and get comparatively little maintenance to compensate for it. While the engines themselves may look 10 years old, th...

Re: Question on Amtrak GR to Chicago

As Ypsi said, the Pere Marquette runs with Superliners, which are the most comfortable cars on the fleet at the moment. All cars should now have multiple outlets at each set, allowing you to plug in and use chargers, laptops and other devices. The Pere Marquette does have a cafe in the lower level o...

Re: NS updates: April

To restate some TRUE info that was mentioned by Mr. TrainWatcher... Report coming out of Pittsburgh that the unit has been assigned to lead a #544 coal train, which goes to Trenton, Mich., out of Conway this evening. If this is true, then its setup time at Conway is a lot shorter than its older sibl...

Re: Pere Marquette high speed?

Grand Rapids-Lansing-Detroit is a travel market. People may not be screaming for a train, but if one were to show up, they would ride it. The majority of corridor trains in other states has PROVEN this. Yeah, but how many people, and with how much subsidizing? AMTRAK is always going to be a money l...

Re: Pere Marquette high speed?

Also, someone cited the Janesville train and the Louisville train as an example of a failure. That's wrong. They were a M&E play, not a passenger play, and when M&E got the boot, so did those trains. No it is not wrong. The statement was this: "ALL of Amtrak's new corridors started in the last 20 y...

Re: New MDOT Rail Plan

for an international train thru Michigan--> ROUTE IT THROUGH DETROIT!!! More Direct, and will soon be state owned and hopefully a 110 MPH rocket ride 8) Unless this portion of PRIIA is amended, that may happen when the state of Michigan begins subsidizing the Detroit trains. That won't happen right...

Re: Amtrak updates

CP-485 is a new Control Point that was added at the east end of Burns Harbor yard, just west of the South Shore bridge. You are correct on 483. NS has their own freight symbols for Amtrak's trains, but I don't believe they are A370, A365, etc. They are not required to call those freight symbols in t...

Re: New MDOT Rail Plan

I'd like to make a few points regarding Montreal. Bring back the International? There was a reason they stopped running it: Customs. It was too much of a hassle getting people across the boarder. Amtrak's Maple Leaf or whatever it's called now crosses the boarder out east and can and has sat at cust...

Re: Pere Marquette high speed?

Okay, time for some clarification: There is NO checked baggage on ANY of the trains in Michigan. Once upon a time, cabbages were used, but the height is higher than that of a baggage car, which made them a giant pain to load and unload. I understand that they are sometimes still loaded, but generall...
