Re: Amtrak Story
I have taken the Pere Marquette twice to Chicago. It is the only way to go. Union Station is in downtown within walking distance of most attractions. It is relaxing and you do get to see quite a bit of railroad stuff going into and coming out of Chicago. First time I went we were delayed by signals ...

Re: Amtrak 371 April 8th Time Change
371 is running four supperliners this week due to spring break and led by loco 115. A few months back it had loco # 500, which when I went to rail pics dot net, it was listed as a test unit for bio diesel. My last trip to Chicago then to Seattle was great the whole way out and back. On 370 sat in fr...

Re: Entering Chicago's Union Station
Went into Chicago Union last October to pick up the Empire Builder to Seattle. Didn't have to stop although we were a little late getting in. That was the second time I have taken the train into Chi. Late both times. We seemed to stop quite a bit in Gary for freights. I've been told NS makes it diff...

Ludington & Northern / C & O
Does anyone out there know about what year Affiliated Home Center started their location along the C & O tracks in Ludington? This is for a modeling project, and I want to get an approximate date so I can include or not include it on the track plan. Thanks.

Re: The HESR in the thumb.
I lived in the "Thumb" for sixteen years (1980 - 1996) and spent time in Caro, lived in Cass City and spent time in Bad Axe and unless it was in 1980 when I first moved there I can't remember seeing a train at all. Good luck

UP Railroad
I am member of a model railroad club in Jenison, MI (West of Grand Rapids) that models the UP circa 1960. The route runs from Duluth, MN to Sault Ste. Marie with the bridge going to Canada. We also have a line that runs south to St. Ignace. We model both general freight and the iron ore mines. If yo...

There are several model railroad clubs in the Grand Rapids / Holland area. And there are some new ones poping up. The two newest ones are modular clubs, one is Free-Mo based the other one is more loosely based on the Michigan Modular group. Information on that group can be found at railsonwheels.com...

Ann Arbor
A couple of months ago, I found a map of the current railroads that are operating in Michigan. I printed it out (at work) and made some copies (at work) and handed it out to rail fan friends. One asked me this weekend if the map was accurate. He noticed that the Ann Arbor is listed and was wondering...

Steelcase spur
I work at Steelcase in the Systems Plant, the line that you are speaking of crosses 36th street near the intersection with Eastern. The line runs at an angle Northwest to Southeast. There is a run a round track on this line. There are two spurs off of the run a round. One goes straight south and end...

I was down at Judd last night til about 7 pm and watched X500 get put together. My scanner was picking up some traffic about a signal problem near Fox and a train in the area was not getting the signal they wanted and the dispatcher couldn't get it fixed. As X500 was sitting RIGHT at the end of Judd...

Is it Illegal to carry a scanner?
I was speaking with the owner of SideTrax Hobbies last night and he told me it is illegal to carry a scanner in your vehicle unless you have a HAM radio license. He told me that if you are pulled over by the police for speading and the scanner is in the vehicle, it is automatically 30 days in jail. ...

Coke Express
I was at Hobby Recycling on Saturday and a CSX engineer trainee was in and said that the Coke Express trains were not going through GR anymore. Also he said that as of April 1 West Olive will be receiving three coal trains a day. I'm not sure if this is accurate with the accident a couple of weeks a...

Went to Judd St. about 5 pm. watching the switch job, red Ford Ranger pulls up, guy steps out and asks, "You a railfan?" To witch I replied "YES." He turns around and digs in the back of the truck and hauls out a huge book on the history of steam. Hands it to me and says, "I've got a bunch of train ...

Probably the easiest thing to do would be to try to get it declared as a historical site. This would depend on the age of the structure etc. You should find out if the county has a historical society and contact them. Also go to the state of Michigan web site and see if they have any info on what th...

One of the guys that works at the Riders in GR is always telling me that management is always complaining they don't make any money which I think is one of the reasons they shortened there hours on Saturday. Plus you look around at the staff and they always have about 3 people in the front of the st...
