Re: First Michigan G&W engine

2019 sitting by North Yard enginehouse at Muskegon. Lots of tire tracks going by it in the snow. Must be more foamers around here than I thought..

Re: U.P. question

[quote="i995impalass"][quote="AARR"] Other ore operations are pellet reclaim on LS&I, a pellet picker pulls all the loose pellets off the tracks and loads into ore cars. Usually this is the pellet collector itself, a hi-rail truck or two, and 3-5 ore cars. The picker is able to couple to the ore car...

Re: Switch Detailing

The Central Valley turnout detail kit includes a 'working' switchstand. You can't use the switchstand to line the switch, but if you move the points the target will rotate. It's made for use with their turnout kits, but can be adapted to pretty much any brand of turnout. Note that they also sell jus...

Muskegon updates

Better late than never, right? Nugent North transload has been shipping sand for about three weeks now. Started shipping about 6 cars/day for a couple weeks, but it looks like they're ramping up now, about a dozen cars up at the site, stashed on all legs of the wye. I haven't gotten up there while a...

Nugent at Berry Jct.

Not sure how this good news has escaped notice so far.. Nugent's sand transload facility at Berry Junction is under construction. They got the concrete foundations poured and what appears to be a surge bin installed. Looks like spots for loading two cars at a time. It's located right on the old main...

Re: New Coal Movement for LS&I in UP

To clear up confusion, the coal is to fire the pellet kilns at the mine, not generate electricity. All electricity comes from the Presque Isle power plant, which gets coal directly from boats. The kilns can run on natural gas, coal, or a third fuel I can't remember and which the official pamphlet do...

Re: Handlaying Track

As someone who has handlaid some shoddy looking track that still works, I can give you some pointers. All my track (excepting my staging yard) is handlaid Micro Engineering code 40, 55, 70, 83 rail on wood ties or Central Valley tie strips. I've tried spikes and various adhesives: spikes go in quick...

Re: Scanner programming best practices question

I use one bank per geographic area (LP, UP, Chicago, etc.) with all frequencies labeled, and have one bank for all AAR channels and one for all navigation channels. I use the bank for an area if I have it; if not, I use the AAR bank and lockout any frequencies that are getting static or other junk. ...

Re: Upper Peninsula Radio Freq....

These are my most recent notes, though I haven't been up in a year, so no telling if anything's changed recently. ALso haven't been able to narrow down the CN yard frequencies, oh well. Lake Superior & Ishpeming (LS&I) 160.230 8 Road 161.370 84 Yard/Tilden 161.490 92 Yard/Empire 160.950 56 Yard/Dock...

Re: Flat Cars in Muskegon

Heard from someone who talked to the guys working on the cars that they're for Consumers Power. They're going to use them for planking so they can get a crane out to work on electric towers out in the swamps.

Re: New unit for the Mid Michigan

3885 has been sitting in front of Henry St. enginehouse for about a week now, I haven't seen it move (though I haven't been paying close attention, either). 3836 and 3839 are sitting in the house, no apparent problems. I don't know about the 9's, I didn't see them at Henry St. yard today, and there ...
