Re: Impractical Diamond
Manual interlockings are still fairly common, but not so much on busier lines. It’s entirely possible that it has something to do with how the CN governs operations on their line, perhaps restricted limits that are bisected by the NS diamond? Without seeing the timetable to see what type of traffic ...

Re: Kzoo looks to close 3 crossings, move railyard
That's a lot more than I thought. What if they moved the mainline closer to Porter Street? That might allow them enough room to only sacrifice the one parking lot for a northern wye leg. Still not ideal but makes a lot more sense than moving the whole yard. I don't think this is being seen as an ei...

Re: Kzoo looks to close 3 crossings, move railyard
I think the biggest issue that they run into is when they have to back their train up in order to go North to GR. I don’t understand why they don’t put a switch in from the Amtrak mainline to their mainline heading north. When the train has to back up to then head north it blocks the downtown inter...

Amtrak maintains track in Kzoo, pisses off city
Well, this is a new one. Apparently Amtrak’s repairs at the Howard Street crossing in Kalamazoo included tamping the track, raising it about nine inches. Anyone who has driven over this crossing before knows it tends to be steep on the Stadium Drive side. Always has been. Now people are catching air...

Re: CSX head on collision in Folkston, Georgia
These railroads have to stop cramming everything into one spot. Now I know the MOW worker screwed up. But you had 4 trains in the vicinity. M442, M209, L743 and I032. Please tell us how the number of trains in the area has anything to do with anything. The dispatcher generally isn’t issuing authori...

Since when does humor = trash? Good lord, lighten up. I can find that kind of humor on Facebook, and it added nothing to the topic. This isn’t that serious of a board man  I don't think this would have anything to do with it, but does anyone know how the long WATCO's lease of the Grand Elk...

Re: GDLK Operations
Was the Kalamazoo Yard recently renamed back to Botsford? I see the signage has changed on the yard office. Clearly the NS has decided to terminate the lease and take over operations again, just before they sell the whole thing plus their rights on the Michigan Line to the CP. Super helpful respons...

Re: Highway construction at Trowbridge
They’re probably running work zones while contractors are actually on site. Depending on the phases and how close men and equipment are, there may or may not be slow speeds given to trains passing by the employee in charge. Pretty typical to give 30s when men are around but not super close to the t...

Re: The port of monroe-containers?
…which is served by CP… While the entire Duluth Port Terminal is served by CPKC, the container operation is actually a CN service. Their intermodal unit trains drop the cut at Pokegama, which the interchange/shover job takes to Stinson with any other traffic they have and delivers it to the CPKC. F...

Re: Amtrak 355 accident-New Buffalo
….Yet that was because BNSF doesn't know how to maintain crossings for an exceptionally fast mainline... lol k On topic now, it’s nothing short of a miracle that there weren’t more casualties from this. Very happy to hear everyone is reasonably ok given this could have easily resulted in a lot of f...

It’s…..so…..awful Seriously, the cab numbers are tiny and off centered, the coloring is meh (not to mention it looks like matte paint) and the entire thing looks like it was designed by a 5 year old in the back of the family minivan. Maybe it’ll look better in person but holy hell it seems like Cree...

I was wondering what the requirements are to start working on the railroad In Michigan on the Grand Rapids or Plymouth sub Let me say this, given your username…. And although it has gotten slightly better, many a manager will be hiding in the bushes trying to get you on anything and everything, particularly on class 1s and many class 2s. ….and aren't constantly trying to get you in trouble for something. Curious what road this is because I’ve found it’s not...

Re: Upper Peninsula Railroading
In a month or so, I will be heading back to upper Michigan (mostly Marquette) to visit some friends that live up there. I know this has been discussed years ago in a different thread, but I wanna know how accurate it is in 2023. I also have not been up to the U.P in about three years. Can someone g...

Re: Future of the Plymouth Sub/Grand Rapids Sub
Was out and about on Saturday, driving Red Arrow Highway from Hartford to Benton Harbor. Heavy green paint markings applied to the tail and ties indicate what I assume is going to be a tie replacement project. From the grade crossings in Hartford, Watervliet, Coloma, and at Kerlikowske Rd near Rive...
