Re: Sappi down, scrap yard up in Muskegon
Don't paper mills stink? Not necessarily. The bit that smells is a pulp mill. Sappi (and SD Warren before that) smelled for years when the pulp mill was active until the late-90's/early-00's. The pulp mill closed, wood pulp trucked in and the smell went away. The smell itself not very offesive, jus...

Re: Everything/Anything CF&E thread...Part 2
I worked with him on the FWCH/CHFW mostly. We were both on the extra board and had the same off day (bid it that way on purpose so we would get lined up more often). He was formerly an NS dispatcher/engineer out of East Wayne Yard. Here's an interesting cab ride video with him in it. Not my video, d...

That's a good man right there. One of my favorites to work with when I was there.

Re: MMRR Z627 Log
Their silos don't look that big, but then again, it's been a long time since I've been to Fremont. 600,000 bushels (of corn) would actually fill a 130-car train. Still take forever doing one car at a time up under the spout on the stub track and then back out to the siding. They'd have to have cars ...

Re: MMRR Z627 Log
Gerber rail service lasted atleast several months into the MS era. At one point Rail America leased a bunch of 1981-built (Evans-SIECO) Louisville, New Albany & Corydon (LNAC) insulated plug door boxes resteciled for the Hartford & Slocomb RR (HS) to improve service, but it is more economical for th...

Re: CSX Derailment in South Chicago
Q192 rear ended K253 and then into E945 on the other track.
Guess I'll have to watch my back now that Danville crews are crashin.

Re: CSX Derailment in South Chicago
Csx shows going via blue island sub and around Barr. Times match the report too. Didn't hit 138th at dolton until 0200 eastern. Practice safe CSX That's what I figured, UP computer lying again. I think they have it bulletined to run one way and don't change the schedule when it runs another way. Th...

Re: CSX Derailment in South Chicago
Interesting if it indeed was Q192, in that the UP computer shows it going via the C&WI to the BRC @ 80th Street. It can go either way to 59th Street, but it shows OS'ing Oakdale on the C&WI at 0024 this morning. So, hmm...

Re: CSX Derailment in South Chicago
Isn't that the second CSX wreck this year that involves 3 trains, all of which were going in the same direction, and was started by a rear-ending? Yes. I'm going to guess that two of the trains involved were Q192 (Nash-Chi w/13 cars -- haha I cheated, UP screen verifies 13 cars), E945 coal empties ...

Re: CNW AC44CW OLS on 38e
Yeah, way to make friends with the railroad by shining bright lights at the trains. I'd imagine something would 'fall' off the train and take those out pretty quickly. Deshler would do this at the Crossroads Park. They've have them pointed towards the cab pretty much blinding the crews. Didn't last...

Re: Any body seen any GP60's?
...I mean, GP60's really aren't that rare on NS. They have 48 of them and they are not that uncommon leading locals, short-run manifests, grain shuttles, pig iron, etc. Let's talk about something that is more rare...SD50s, GP50s, PR43Cs, B32-8s... The CSX GP60s are rare as there are only 3 of them a...

Re: CSX Train Location Update 8-27-12
Sounds like a 7221 moving around Plymouth, probably on a switch job. Not sure what that is, CSX doesn't have an engine numbered 7221, could be BNSF 7221 on a coal train? Sounds like there's a 39927 moving around Plymouth now. Is this a Detroit to Toledo train? Q399-27 is a Detroit-Toledo/Stanley Ya...

Was 3864 an IORY unit as well before it was CORP and then CEFX? It didn't have an reporting marks on it other than the number when it was on the I&O, IIRC.

That's an AC44CW. There are no patched C44-9W's left on UP. The only ones that are not in UP paint are the CNW's 8646/8701.

Re: Trip Report 8/18-8/19: "A Night on The Nickel Plate Road
Perhaps they based it off the photos he posted? By looking at the photos, I would personally say they did better with the last shoot in Elkhart. My critiquing would be this: the lighting was too harsh and as I said before, black & white is going to be a better choice for attempting to recreate a his...
