Re: Superior View Galleries

Hey guys, it is well worth the trip to visit the Mackinac City store. You will be like a kid in a candy shop, something to do while the wife visits the other tourist traps. Unless she is like my wife and wants to look at trains also.

Re: Pere Marquette Rail Trail

Unfortunately I don't. I didn't have a camera. There are some on the internet. I have found some on Railpictures by using the filters and filtering C&O, B&O, Chessie, and Michigan.

Re: Pere Marquette Rail Trail

they ran about two trains a day each way. Many chemical cars as Dow had a plant in Ludington at that time. Also lots of boxcars and there was a lumber yard in Averill that it served. Usually had 3 GP 7s or 9s about 90% of the time. Occasionally 2 or 4 units were used. One time in 1972 there were 2 n...

Re: Pere Marquette Rail Trail

I would like to see the trains also, Josh, I remember pacing the trains from Midland to Loomis back in the 60s and 70s when I still lived in Midland. It is a nice trail and I have biked it many times and hope to do it once more before the snow flies.

Re: Protecting of sources

The last article I read about it a few years back was that the Navy finally admitted that it was a battery explosion in the torpedo rooom... It seems that this was kept classified for many years because the supplier had a sweetheart contract and the higher ups did not want this known. The batteries ...

Re: Actual Possibility of New Durand Diamond ACTUAL!

The nice thing about the sound of the train hitting the diamonds is that we could count the number of cars in the train from my house 1/2 mile away from the diamonds. I love the northern Michigan woods but I miss the train sounds of Durand.

Re: Protecting of sources

I think military physicals are the most subjective thing about the military. The standards are adjusted to meet the number of bodies needed. When I went for a pre induction physical in Nov. 65, guys failed because they were overweight When I got to basic in Feb. 66, there were fatter guys in trainin...

Re: Superior View Galleries

BTW, a huge amout of the stuff is northern Michigan and the UP. Most of the pictures are private pics that they have bought from estates and individuals. So a lot of them have the amatuer touch as opposed to being professionally shot.

Re: Superior View Galleries

I have been to that shop in Mackinac City. I have spent a couple of afternoons going thru their catalog of pics that are sorted by groups, I liked the trains and boats. I have a few 8x11 of old wrecks of steam engines. They will do sizes up to 14x22 if I remember correctly. Well worth the time and t...

Re: 2000 Birmingham Michigan Derailment

As for the cause I remember reading somewhere that it was primarily caused because the train had the loaded(heavy ) cars in the rear and the unloaded (light) cars in front of them and when the engineer made the brake application the heavy cars buckled the light ones. I remember thinking to myself th...

The same thing is happening in the numismatic realm also. Shows are smaller, dealers are fewer, it is cheaper to do online. Just another way the internet has changed our lives. :)

Re: Owosso question

Abandonment came thru on that old NYC line south of Owosso. There are currently coal and auto frame flats stored south of town. With the line abandoned they dont have to service the customer but they dont have to tear up the tracks. I'd assume that with the current economy and car storage rates tha...

buying and moving a caboose

I now live in a place where I can fulfill a dream, having my own caboose. I have looked online and found some for sale but what I need to know: Does anyone know what it would cost tomove one of these things. The nearest tracks are Pinconning and I am 18 miles west of that. More to the point , should...
