Re: Tree making
In the October/November issue of O Gauge Railroading, there is a nice article on making trees. The author uses SuperTrees, Green Leaf Flake, Easy Tree Kit plastic armatures, and web spray adhesive from Scenic Express, along with a list of other adhesives, paints and other tools and materials. The pi...

Railroad Manuals
A friend of mine was cleaning out an office and found some railroad manuals. He had no interest in them and knowing that I have an interest in railroads, he passed them on to me. The first is an Electro-Motive Division Engine Maintenance Manual No. 252C for Model 567C engines, 1st edition March, 195...

Re: Michigan G&W Loco Roster & Pre-G&W Paint Lists
Word around The Thumb has HESR 2025 as the next unit to receive the G&W paint scheme. Last week I heard that the paint crew was back in Bad Axe but could not confirm it. My contact at the HESR sent me an email stating that 2025 was going to be the next victim. Keep your eyes open along the Huron and...

The radio report said they received two inbound loads of ingredients as a backup because they are concerned about delays from suppliers served by Great Lakes shipping companies that are being slowed by the lingering ice coverage.

Re: Michigan Shortlines May
HESR 2028 left Bad Axe light tonight at 7:45. They were long hood forward headed west. There were twenty covered hoppers waiting for them at the COOP facility east of Elkton. There was also a string of about twenty box cars on the spur by the colored bean plant in Pigeon. There wasn't much to see bu...

Easter Sunday Sightings
We made the Easter trip from Caseville to St. Louis on Sunday with only a few rail related sightings. In St. Louis, Bear Truss had a loaded BCOL centerbeam flat. In Breckenridge, there was one USLX tank car just east of the elevator, and two or three covered hoppers just east of the tank car. There ...

Re: My "Anywhere Michigan" N-scale Layout
Model Railroaders Special Issue Model Railroad Planning 2005 has an article on Arnt Gerritson's AA layout including the carferry operations in Frankfort/Elberta. Connections with Penn Central and C&O are part of the layout. It is a very good article, including the track plan. If you are interested, ...

Re: Michigan Shortlines April
I had to take the munchkin to Bad Axe for her check-up and we got to see a lot of cars on the HESR from Pigeon to just east of Elkton. In Pigeon, there were 9 box cars at the end of the spur at Berne Road. There were at least 3 box cars at the COOP Colored Bean Plant. There were about 20+ covered ho...

Re: Military Train To Where?
Grayling is quite familiar with military convoys as are other towns along I-75 and US-127. When I was growing up in St. Louis, the out of state units would come up US-127 and overnight at the middle school parking lots across the street from our house. They would begin arriving at about 5:00 p.m. an...

The best I have experienced is the Greenbrier River Trail in West Virginia.

My favorite "local to me" trail is the Pere Marquete Rail Trail in Midland.

Re: Lionel Visitor's Center
I believe Lionel still operates warehouses/distribution center in Chesterfield Township. Their shipping boxes still have Chesterfield printed on them. The move of manufacturing to Mexico took place in 1982. Production returned to the US in 1984. When Lionel closed its plants in the US in 2001, the p...

Trains Magazine Article
The April issue of Trains Magazine has a story written by the "switching supervisor", Frank H. Dewey, of Dean Yard in Midland. The story is about a runaway GP7 with seven cars from Saginaw Yard that is caught and stopped by the power from another train. The events occurred on December 17, 1970. Does...

Re: What is the coolest abandoned equipment you have seen
In Caseville, we have remnants of the PO&N used to protect the fire hydrants. Several of the hydrants in town have three lengths of rail buried vertically with about 24" left above ground. The rails have a heavy metal band welded to them creating a ring around the hydrant.
