Re: NKP 765 on the AA

In 2009, it came through Milan at dusk, which did not bode well for shooting at ISO 1600 with the D200. I've got shots of the engine and Ann Arbor 'helper' coming up from Toledo, which is an indication that it did not go through Butler. In less than a month, it will run from Detroit (more or less) t...

Re: Droned In: A New YouTube Series

Heh! Poor Joyce and lucky you... but ya know, these things seem only to be wide angle, and what your peeping tom eyes really wanted was the telephoto effect ;-) Just how long do you really think you would have been able to hold onto the controls before you passed out or better? Snicker. (Stay away f...

Re: NKP 765 on the AA

Steam Central reports that NKP 765 will be on the move from Ft Wayne on Tuesday. The have a nominal departure time of 9 AM and arrival at 5 PM. I'd take the day as true and the times with a lot of salt ;-)

Re: FED UP WITH THE TRAIN.

Let's remember, folks, the government is representative. The mayor is hearing stuff from voters, and she is just repeating what has been hammering her office telephones. Like all of us, she'll use the worst case examples to prove her point. When someone dies because of a crossing tie-up, there may b...

I wonder how much is through freight, and how much reflects local jobs between Detroit and Windsor... A few 20 car trains would quickly lower the average car count...

Re: Droned In: A New YouTube Series

The FAA regs regarding drones are not yet out... Something about 2015. Sure, for now they say keep it below 400 feet, and away from other things flying in the sky. I'd avoid people as well ;-) It's going to take a while for the dust to settle on these little R/C drones. Ever figure out why yours dro...

Re: Droned In: A New YouTube Series

Last I remember from Civics class back in 1961 was that Federal Law trumped State Law... It's the FAA that's calling the shots here. Trespass? I would think if you were over the railroad yard, you would be trespassing... Go too high, and you are in FAA land, under that, trespass. Oh well. There is a...

Re: NKP 765

That would be cool... Let's see... It lives in Fort Wayne, but was recently in Chicago. If it comes home to Fort Wayne before it heads off to Owosso, I would bet on the Wabash route... If it stays in Chicago, there are going to be a lot of happy foamers on the old NYC to Detroit. Keep your fingers c...

Re: Nikon D3100

RRF deleted most of the EXIF for this shot, but: 1/3 sec, ISO 800, f5.6 on a substantial tripod... You really do want to consider a tripod for night shots... Oh... The lighting was from a very bright one that was at Owosso that evening. http://railroadfan.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10574/US_Owosso_...

I would think it will come up the old Wabash line to Detroit...

Time will tell.

Re: Nikon D3100

Night shots? Get the best tripod / head that you can afford. When the sun is down, the light is gone and you'll be shooting still life in seconds and 10s of seconds.

Re: Bad Color???

The color looks fine, but I'd lighten the shot a bit to the extent that the rocky roadbed was a bit lighter. They're probably really reacting to the outstanding sunlight glare on the engine's forward facing windows. You know of course that those guys aren't happy with any shots not meeting their for...

Re: A Trip to West Virginia: Help Needed

I rode up the New River line back in 1991 or so... NRHS was there with NKP 765 and PM 1225. You really need a car / truck to visit this area and do it justice. Google Maps for: Hawks Nest State Park, Hawks Nest Road, Ansted, WV and I think you'll find an interesting bridge. It's where the line split...

Re: Processing RAW

You are right: raw editors process in 16 bits. You'd want them to since they're processing 12 to 14 bit images... And from there, you go to an 8 bit editor for heavy duty editing, save for something like I'm using. Actually, I'm editing in 32 bit float with gimp-2.9.1: that's the internal structure ...

Re: Processing RAW

It would be helpful to know your operating system. I'd like to see the *.nef file just for fun. I run linux, so that means ufraw -> gimp. For gimp, I'm using 2.9.1 which is compiled from source code. When released, it will be gimp-2.10.x, and it will feature 16 bit processing, which is what you want...

Hey! I see that you can buy prop guards for really cheap. It's a good investment unless you have bottomless pockets and liability lawyers on the payroll with nothing to do ;-)

Have fun with the thing, but be extra cautious.

Re: Headlight Glare

I'd like to see an example shot to know what you're getting at. Glare? Reflections? Which is it. I'm guessing reflections. Skip the UV filter; that's old film practice, good for UV and lens protection, but not needed with digi cameras for UV, and it will introduce reflections. When I made the switch...

Pat: If you get to Edgerton, OH, don't miss the Wye action at Bryan, Ohio. That should have some great shots. Just need to remember fresh batteries and your best foam filter. Mine usually works ;-)
