PM 1225 Week Two of 2013

He's got a highball, and he's on the way to Ashley http://railroadfan.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10574/US_Owosso_MI_2013-12-08_14_05_6380_PM_1225_RRF.jpg Out in the middle of the county, I found him chugging towards Carland road. I'm on Baldwin Road http://railroadfan.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10...

Re: Try this with your trusty point-and-shoot

Hi, Pat. Yes, the shot needs post processing, but then all raw images do, so this went through ufraw to convert to 16 bit png, and then into gimp-2.9.1 for processing; mantiuk06 is used for tone mapping. How far to take it, and what to do with it is up to whomever is doing the editing. Part of the e...

Re: Try this with your trusty point-and-shoot

J T's got it right... It depends on what one wants from the shot. The sun is in the wrong spot for a decent locomotive shot, but it does a good job with the steam exhaust. If you like steam drama, the original locomotive shot should appeal, otherwise, not so much. The usual point-and-shoot camera wi...

Re: Try this with your trusty point-and-shoot

The original is a NEF (raw image) file from the camera. I tried to upload the 16 bit image in both tif and png formats, but RRF rejected those. This is an eight bit image with zero manipulation. The advantage of 16 bits is that much more information is retrained in the shadows. For the original imag...

Re: Try this with your trusty point-and-shoot

Norm, you can do that, but you'll move the whole curve with effects that won't be pleasing, unless you do some tricks with masking, and that will likely not look so good either. Give it a try if you want. The histogram of the raw image shows white space to the left and right, which is to say that th...

Shots of PM 1225 on 2013-11-30

I caught PM 1225 on Reuss Road this morning. So much for composition 'rules.' http://railroadfan.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10574/US_Owosso_MI_2013-11-30_10_26_6288_PM_1225_RRF.jpg In the afternoon, I caught her again at the same spot... http://railroadfan.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10574/US_Owoss...

Re: Pere Marquette 1225 Under Steam

Bank on a Geep to pull them back. There was a Geep on the end of the Wednesday and Friday trains. If the backroads are in good condition, I'll try to catch it leaving Owosso, then at Elsie, before nabbing it at Ashley. Photographically, I would expect the trip from Ashley back to Owosso to be not so...

She's Back! The switch has just been thrown and she's inching forward slowly enough not to blur the 1/3 second shot :-)

Re: Good repair shop in Grand Rapids?

Back in the day, and I mean back in the day (50 years ago) Norman Camera was a good shop. I'd still try there. They have a store in GR and also in Kalamazoo.

Re: What is the frequency of the ATCS transmission in Durand

I got an answer on the atcsmon mailing lists. The frequency is OK, and most likely my problem is the monitor that I'm using, sad to say.

What is the frequency of the ATCS transmission in Durand

In ATCSMon, I can click on Configure > MCP Info and read that the frequency is 928.08125 for Durand info/radio data.. When I put that frequency into my scanner, I hear nothing. I would like to be able to use a radio to get the ATCS data rather than rely on wifi, which is 'iffy' at Durand Union Stati...

DUS on 2013-08-23

My arrival at DUS was around 11 AM and the first train trundled by around 2 PM... Radio chatter indicated a mechanical problem with an east bound at Perry. Anyway... A few shots from the day. After a few east bounds HESR came to town with this pair of engines. Any bets on how long it takes for HESR ...

The line west of Lansing may have had less traffic today, but things in Durand were pretty much normal.
