Re: 2024 North Central Region - Spring Modelers Meet
About 60 people turned out for the meet. The Senior Center was a nice location that easily accommodated everyone. The BBQ truck the host committee brought in for on-site lunch was quite good and a bit faster than most other trucks I've seen. Highlights from the display room included Dave McMullian's ...

Re: Christmas Gifts 2023
My brother-in-law gave me a Rider's gift certificate, but otherwise I didn't receive any model railroad-related gifts this year.
I did, however, give my brother a LocoBuffer-ng (computer-LocoNet interface) to refresh his Digitrax equipment and experimentation collection.

SRI North Pole Express Article in Dec. 1 Detroit Free Press
The Free Press ran a rather good article on SRI's North Pole Express and the history of 1225 in its December 1, 2023 online edition. The photography is outstanding for this sort of article. It's paywalled as a subscriber-only article, but for those who have a subscription you can find it here: https...

Re: Diamond in Grand Rapids
Yup, Fuller Junction is where the GTW's Grand Rapids Subdivision crossed the C&O's Baldwin Subdivision. The crossing at Fuller was protected by signals and a smash gate. The photo you mention is of the February 7, 1954 collision between GTW Mikado #3752, pulling a freight train running as Extra 3752...

Re: Whistle Stop Caboose Ice Cream
Ice Cream Caboose in Alto wins points from me for having an olive burger with real sliced olives, as opposed to the mayo-based topping with hints of olive flavor that has become common at many burger joints in West Michigan.

Re: Times have changed, AAShow
Yeah, Garry, the chicken sandwich was bad too-- it was the most miserable dried-out thing I've tried to eat for as long as I can remember. At least the sausage with onions and peppers was tasty. There were quite a few vendors with especially well-priced stuff this year, and a decent variety to choos...

Re: SE Michigan Model Train Show and Sale - November 27, 2022 in Saline
One of the things I enjoy about train shows is that I often find used things that I wouldn't on eBay- in my modeling niche (HO scale, 1940s-1950s PM and C&O), an awful lot of what I look for comes from guys getting out of the hobby who can't or won't do eBay. Or, more often lately, their buddies sel...

Re: SE Michigan Model Train Show and Sale - November 27, 2022 in Saline
One of the things that has hurt train shows in general is that we've lost a lot of the guys who sell trains and related stuff as a regular business in the past several years. G&G Hobbies out of Leslie used to buy quite a few tables at shows and was a good reliable source of new N scale. Closed and g...

Re: Lansing show, fun?
That was a pretty impressive line at opening. I went in not really looking for anything in particular, but just like the last three times I've gone to the show, I left with barely enough cash to buy a late lunch. I got a bunch of Tomar signals for effectively $10 per signal head, then bought Chuck G...

Re: ADBF/JAIL Changes Made Under New Ownership
Do we have confirmation that the dinner trains are kaput? They still have a "Dinner Train" tab on their website with the statement: At this time, due to the Covid-19 Pandemic we are not running the The Murder Mystery Dinner Train©. We do not have an expected return date. The website will be updated...

October 28: W. His HO scale Virginian & Ohio was covered heavily in the model railroad press and was c...

Re: Old Piggyback Trailer Seen
At first mention, I thought that might have been the CGW trailer that was back along Catholic Church Road or Parman Road west of Stockbridge back in the early 1990s (and might still be), but the one I remember was mostly white or silver with a horizontal stripe across the side about a quarter of the...

Attila "Art" Zombor passed away on Thursday, September 8. He was 85 and one of the last remaining members of the former Allen Park Model Railroad Club (if not the last). He served as merchandise manager for both the Chesapeake & Ohio Historical Society and the Pere Marquette Historical Society acros...

Re: What Railroad Do You Model.......
I recently took a good look at the space I'll have (the "lifetime layout" goes into our next house, and we already know which house that is), and scaled back my plans. My original plan was to model the Pere Marquette in HO from Benton Harbor-St. Joe to New Buffalo and maybe on to Michigan City. As I...

Re: Question about the C&O in Michigan City
Thanks! That helped me to eliminate a couple of dates that had been suggested. Now I can at least narrow it down to the depot having been demolished between 1952 and 1961, which is an improvement. The lack of any driveway and parking by 1952 implies that while the depot was still standing, the PM or...

Question about the C&O in Michigan City
I'm editing an article that was sent to me on the PM/C&O Michigan City passenger depot and freight house buildings at the corner of Arthur and Franklin Streets Would anyone be able to give me the approximate date that each of these were demolished? The material I'm working with is a bit confused on ...
