Re: Wolverine to Toronto?
One thing I've been curious about for awhile is the idea of running a "loop" train via Chicago, Battle Creek, Lansing, Durand, Detroit, Battle Creek, Chicago. In both directions. Hits your various stops and allows for some interesting route combinations. There really is only a short 40 mile gap pre...

Re: Train Derailment In Muscatine County, Iowa.
Yesterday, in rural Muscatine County, Iowa, near Midway Beach, a CPKC train derailed on an industrial spur. The train was apparently going down a grade when it happened. https://www.kwqc.com/2024/06/30/train-derailment-rural-muscatine-county-injures-1-officials-say/ https://www.google.com/maps/plac...

Re: Gradient Chart/Track Profile for CSX Plymouth Sub
I think at one time two different dispatchers handled the Michigan lines, one the west side and one the east side. So, they made the split at Trowbridge and had to create two subs since 2 different dispatchers couldn’t dispatch the same named Sub.

Re: Gradient Chart/Track Profile for CSX Plymouth Sub
If the subdivision names seem funky it's because under C&O Saginaw to Alexis was the Toledo Sub. At that time, Michigan was divided into the Saginaw and Grand Rapids DIVISIONS. Then around 1970, they inserted a Detroit Division which included Detroit to Beck Road Plymouth and Wixom to Alexis. In doi...

Re: White Cloud question
When viewing this discussion regarding White Cloud, I can't help but think about a Road Foreman of Engines we had when I worked in Saginaw. He came to us from the B&O sometime in the late 70's. Great personality and easy to work with. For some unknown reason when he made his trips out "on the road" ...

These bridges certainly stand the test of time! The swing bridge where I worked on the Mississippi River (still in operation) was built in 1898.

Re: Gradient Chart/Track Profile for CSX Plymouth Sub
The track profiles in the timetable were meant to be just a handy reference. We had other highly detailed profile books in a folded format that went mile by mile with elevations, road crossings, curvature, bridges, etc. I have several from the 1970's, but none of the Plymouth Sub since it wasn't par...

Re: Downfall of Plymouth
I just was watching a video on Youtube about the city of Plymouth and the guy in the video was griping about the train traffic in Plymouth MI and I would always hear stories from friends and family about how annoying the trains are in Plymouth. I live near Plymouth on the CSX Detroit Sub and I go t...

Re: White Cloud question
About 30 cars a week (three blocks of 10 cars) of whatever that chemical was still being delivered via UP-CN-CMGN in the 90's. I don't know if it still is or not. I heard about this train brought up by some people that live up that way. Where did it run to? It came up to Chicago from Freeport, TX o...

There was also the Dow Special on Sundays and the empties back on Thursday. I also recall the occasional GR-Baldwin turn when needed. Not sure what they ran in PM days. Re: MMRR industries/HESR new connection in Alma
I honestly can't recall how much the refinery shipped by rail. From what I could "Google" it appears the refinery closed in 1999. I used to spend summers on my grandmother's farm in Gratiot county and remember when driving into Alma I would always see that flame burning up on a high tower. I stayed ...

Re: MMRR industries/HESR new connection in Alma
When I was on the agent/operator extra board out of Saginaw, I worked the agency at St Louis a few times when the regular agent was on vacation. That would have been 1976, just before I started breaking in on dispatching. The main customer then was the chemical plant. I remember having to drive into...

Re: White Cloud question
As I recall, ML18 and MP17 usually met at White Cloud. MP17 usually met #145 at either Kopje or Baldwin. #145 and #146 almost always met at Walhalla. There was an operator on duty at Baldwin on the night shift who gave us all the "dope" on the trains out of GR and Manistee for our train sheet and us...

Re: White Cloud question
Maybe not the high point, but in the 1960’s to 1980’s you had the GR-Traverse City pair 145/146. Later cut back to Manistee. You had the GR-Saginaw pair 238/239 which later became ML18/MP17 and the passenger train pair 25/26 GR-Petoskey. The psgr service ended in 1966 I believe. All those trains als...

Re: MMRR industries/HESR new connection in Alma
The MAC elevator east of Breckenridge is probably the largest customer. They are one of the largest, if not the largest, elevator in MI. My guess is the Anderson's in Hemlock would be the second largest. The "fueling terminal" is an asphalt distributer. Last I heard they receive about 250 cars a ye...

Re: New Ties along the Lake State Railroad in Holly
Although the traffic levels here are nothing like they used to be (20+ trains a day during my time), it's nice to see that LSRC is maintaining the track!
