Put this together for TRRS. Sure wish I had ancient footage of the 1980s or 90s. Maybe a project for another time ;)

Ep. 458: Classic CSX Consists of the Willard Sub

NORTH BALTIMORE 9-12-15 -- SD50-2s, B20-8s, C40-8Ws and CW44ACs - hallmarks of the CSX Classical Roster. And still moving freight on the B&O Mainline in Northwest Ohio.

In this episode of TRRS, we're taking a look at two trains of classic power. The first, a westbound intermodal with 3rd generation GE Widecabs from the late 90s and early 2000s - in the classic YN2 paint scheme.

Next, we're heading eastward with a manifest, powered by a pair of 80s sisters: a B20-8 (downrated from B40-8) and an SD50-2.

CSX Intermodal WB
Consist:
- CSX 140 [CW44AC]
- CSX 7885 [C40-8W]
- CSX 536 [CW44AH]
- CCU [Intermodal]
Location/Time:
- CSX Willard Sub, Fostoria, OH, Tiffin St bridge, on 9-12-15 at 17:07 EDT
- North Baltimore, OH, Main St xing, at 18:05 EDT

CSX Manifest EB B20-8 leader
Consist:
- CSX 5968 [B20-8]
- CSX 2481 [SD50-2]
- CCU [Mixed]
Location/Time:
- (a) CSX Willard Sub, North Baltimore, OH, Liberty High Rd bridge, on 9-12-15 at 18:51 EDT
- (b) Bairdstown, OH, across a field from Deshler Rd, at 19:47 EDT

It sure was very interesting! Mixes of CSX, NS, & CR power, plus many different lease units from different sources! I would have loved to have a digital camera back then! I still prefer the early days of Conrail, though :)

First, I apologize for the quality, maybe I'll get a good transferring machine for Christmas! Here are some of the videos I took in 1994, 95 around here. Keep in mind, these are Conrail freights between Selkirk, NY and Baltimore, and we're on former Reading RR trackage. I hear years ago the B&O had trackage rights on the Reading, talk about coming full circle!

Hope you enjoy, what a time for many schemes!

As of December 7th, all HLCX SD40-2s have been marked for lease return. CEFX, FURX, CITX stuff has been stored around already.

The remaining units should be funneled towards Waycross in the coming days to be removed from active service.

Meanwhile, some CSX power is also being stored. 46 CW60ACs and 24 C40-9Ws make up most of the stored roster.

Cause is a number of things, including the new power coming online as well as a pretty nasty traffic slump right now. For the week ending Nov 21, US general carloads fell by 9.4% year-to-year, and intermodal volume slumped 1.7%

Additionally, to some extent the 28-hour schedule is also probably helping out the cause.

State of the CSX Locomotive Roster: 2016
This is a summary/annual report detailing happenings within the CSX Locomotive Roster. It will look back on happenings as well as what to look forward to in 2016.

Deliveries on the double
2015 was the biggest year in quite some time for new and refurbished power being added to the roster. Below is a summary of what was delivered to/by CSX in 2015:

GP38-3s (CSX in-house rebuild): 17
GP40-3s (CSX in-house rebuild): 32
SD40-3s (Rebuilds by MPI): 53
ES44AHs (Tier 3 Credit GEVOs): 75
ET44AHs (Tier 4 GEVOs): 125

As far a new deliveries go, we expect to see 100 more ET44AHs in 2016, capping off a 300-unit order for new 6-axle AC power. We don’t exactly know what to expect on the rebuild side, but there are at least 34 SD40-2s in Boise, ID as the rebuild shop which have not yet been rebuilt.

End of the SD80MACs
SD80MACs were the only model eliminated from the roster in 2015, with the 12 units traded to NS for more SD40-2s, all of which have been shipped west for rebuilding.

Repaints
This was a good year for repaints, far outpacing previous years, thanks in part to the rebuilding of so many locomotives.

YN2 Repaints
- 52 GE
- 13 EMD
- 14 Rebuild

81 TOTAL YN2 -> YN3B repaints

YN3 Repaints
89 TOTAL YN3 -> YN3B repaints

Retirements
Retirements for the year 2015:
12 SD80MAC – traded to Norfolk Southern
1 SD70AC – wrecked

Looking ahead

ET44AHs
As previously mentioned, another 100 ET44AHs are expected to be delivered in 2016

Rebuilds
We know the programs will continue, but the extent to which they will is unknown.

Stored Power
CSX has begun to sock power away, as demand falls. Currently, there are over 500 locomotives stored on the active roster, including CW60ACs, C40-8Ws, C40-8s and every single C40-9W. This also includes returning all 100 or so leased locomotives. We shall see what the future brings, but there is always a chance than stuff starts to get cut.

This ends the State of the Roster 2016!

Thanks for the photos, trainspot! Those will be in the next update :)

ET44AHs 3375-3378 spotted at Erie awaiting pickup. Should be 100 more ET44AHs built for CSX this year. With about 10% of the roster now stored, open question as to any retirements. The newest Dash-8 is 22 years old, with most of the C40-8s aged 27 years, for instance.
