Thank goodness for nugent. Although it's got to be a little scary when one customer keeps your railroad open for business

Might as well change the title to Nugent Activity :). Where are those 850 cars a year from Fremont Co-op? Heck, where are the 500 cars they said they had?

Nice log you are making here...might want to edit the first post to show what the different letters mean.....such as:

(E) = Empty
(L) = Load
(B) = Boxcar
(T) = Tankcar
(CH) = Covered Hopper

They got down on their knees going up Henry Street with a light rain falling. Spotted the 4 for Shape and picked up the 2 they dropped off last night, as well as a lone Wisconsin Central box for Bay that they spotted on the way north last night.

That brings this week's total of outbound cars from North Yard to 118 cars (including the lone Bay car that I didn't include in the log, as all of these logs are line ups of what leaves North Yard -- I think next week I will start logging the train south of Bay/Shape. That way the Bay cars that don't come all the way to the yard won't slip between the cracks). Last time I caught them all 5 nights they ran a few weeks ago, the total number of cars was 73. And yes Don, you are right about changing the title of the thread. In fact, they might as well change the name of the railroad! Nugent Sand Southern?

Here's the break down for this past week:

Nugent: 93
Shape: 15
Webb: 6
Brinks: 2
Fremont Co-op: 1
Bay: 1

Look at that...Nugent traffic ALONE accounted for more than the TOTAL of all customers from a few weeks ago! Of course this is including the sand that is being shipped out from Nugent by Sargent Sand as well, but there is not much of that. Webb is picking up as they shipped out more (empties, that is) this week then the past several weeks combined. Brinks appears to be slowing down as the need for nitrogen solution (used in fertilizer) lessens as harvest time draws nearer. Fremont Co-op and Bay both remain on the fritz, ostensibly.

Starting with this report, I will be listing the consist as it is AFTER they switch Bay/Shape as the train would appear coming into Holland. They actually had 23 cars, 1 empty and 3 loads from Shape. Shape had 4 cars at the dock, but only loaded 3. The empty had to be switched to the head car, so they could hang on to it at Holland, bring it back north and re-spot it. I did not count it, since it will be going south again tomorrow night, loaded. They spotted 3 at Shape and with that one extra car, they will have 4 after they re-spot it on the way north -- and then 4 loads south tomorrow night.

The 627 crew also went up to Brinks to grab the 6 empties. Brought them back down to North Yard, left them on the main, north of the lead, went through the yard, backed onto their train on the main and shoved back to the tanks and did their air test. Lots of switching for them tonight, and they didn't leave Bay/Shape until shortly after 0100.

Can they handle all daily chores with one crew on some days? They used to have three crews when all their customers were active and shipping.

I'm sure on some days they could. The days that they only work Nugent are the days one crew could probably do it all. Sometimes Z627 will build their own train, so Iguess technically the do it all on those days, although they don't switch anything other than Brinks and Bay/Shape. The Z627 crew will gather their Shape boxes and sand from the string of loads they have in the yard. I think sometimes they will do it the night (morning) before after they return to North Yard from Holland if the day crew is not working the next day...but I don't stay up that late or get up that early.

4 in and 4 out at Bay. They got an early start as they left shortly before 2200. With that, I decided to follow them down to Holland. When I arrived in Holland, D700 had a restricting into the yard at Middle Waverly. He showed up with CSX 8637 and CSX 213 with 20 cars in tow; 13 for Waverly and 7 for MMRR. D700 and Z627 got to Waverly about the same time and met eachother in the yard for interchange. D700 headed back west 25 cars; 10 from Waverly and the 15 from Muskegon. Z627 subsequently went north with their 7 cars; 2 loads (CH) for Fremont Co-op, 1 empty (CH) for Nugent, 3 empties (B) for BAY (which they dropped off on the way north), and 1 more empty (CH) for Nugent. Followed them back up towards Grand Haven and then called it a night...er...morning. Was home by 0300.

With the colder weather, the Z627 crew had a hard time getting their engines started. 3839 was especially reluctant to start. They departed Muskegon shortly after 2200 and I follow them south again. 2 in and 7 out at Bay/Shape. The 3 boxes that came north last night were for Bay, not Shape as I reported. They stopped on their way north to drop them off.

D700 was in Holland when I arrived. They headed south at 0100 with CSX 2659-CSX 6086 and 21 cars (4 boxes and 17 sand hoppers for Livingston). They dropped off 9 cars for Z627, which they headed north with around 0200. 1 tank (for Brinks, probably), 5 CH for Nugent, 1 1789 tank for Bayer (there you go, Don  ), 1 CH for Nugent and 1 box for Shape (yes, it's really for shape this time, it's a CR (NYC) auto parts box)

3 in, 2 out for Shape. Amazing that a little bit of rain can put an 11 car train on it's knees. Coming up the hill to Airport Rd, engineer reported that he dropped from 27 to 10mph due to wheel slip. 4000 HP and a 1000 ton train. :?

Nugent: 43
Shape: 16
Brinks: 12
Webb: 4
Bay: 3
Fremont Co-op: 2
Bayer: 1

Nugent is the main reason carloads were down :(. Can you speculate on average how many cars go to Defiance?

Off to a good start this week. What a lugger this train was...28 loads of sand! That is the most sand I've ever seen shipped out from Nugent. Good thing it wasn't raining tonight or there would've been no way the train would've gotten up the Henry Street hill or the grade between Getty and Airport Rd. They got quite a bit of momentum for the Henry Street hill, but by the time they got to the top they were well below the speed limit. North Yard was also packed full of Nugent hoppers. They must have had a nice string come in Saturday morning.

Don, I have no idea as to how many cars go to Defiance, although I probably could find out as the only other place the sand goes is to Cudd Pumping Service in Ft. Smith, AR by way of UP.

Adding to the challenge is they ship 40 cars one week then 90 the next :?
