Railfanning in Clinton and Savanna

I went railfanning in Clinton to watch the ex CNW line from Chicago to Omaha and the ex MILW from Minneapolis to Quad cities about a month ago. Milw was about one per hour and the CNW was one all morning! I may go back in November, I can't believe that was normal for the CNW! Any advice would be appreciated. I also wondered if the side trip up to Savanna for the diamond would be worth it.
