Kitty Litter Ballast
I have heard of using kitty litter for ballast before in HO and O scale but i was wondering if anyone has ever tryed to use it in a garden railroad. I was just wondering if it tends to wash out easy or not, I feal like trying it because i think it looks better then pea gravel witch is all i realy have availible to me so if anyone has tryed it or knows something better i could use that looks good let me know.

Only problem I see is its going to get wet in short order, even just from dew. Then it is going to clump and turn dark gray and black.

most kitty litters are just clay. I would think you could find cheap fine stone for your outdoor railway somewhere.

Chicken grit is the standard for garden railway ballast.

Ya i guess so, and i have looked around for stone but i want something grey not multicolor

Turface http://www.turface.com/turface-products ... pro-league This stuff is fired at higher temperatures than kitty litter is and doesn't break down when it gets wet. This stuff is not cheap. We would buy it by the ton in 50 pound bags. The beige turns gray when wet. The scale would be better than pea gravel, but it would still be a little too large for HO and O scale IMO. There are other companies that make calcined clay products like this. Just a suggestion.

Be sure to read the MSDS info on their website. The dust contains silica. Neal
