Since RP has NO interior cab shots of the NYC 3001, I thought i'd send in one. Well, I got hit for PEQ. Maybe the 3001's cab will be RP "acceptable" after she's rebuilt. Now keep in mind that besides her L2a Mowhawk cousin in St. Louis, she is the only one that you CAN go in the CAB! I don't know anymore....

Maybe next time, I'll try to shoot the cab in bigger sections.

Just because railpics doesn't have a shot of 3001's cab already doesn't mean they will just take any ol' picture of it; good, bad or otherwise. I know, for me atleast, the cabinet with the "Hi" on it is rather distracting and distasteful. Do you have any other shots from the cab?

The blown out window and "Hi" is probably where the PEQ stems from.

I tried something similar with 3001, got a PEQ too. Was not surprised though.

No. There are countless examples of non-operating railroad equipment photographs on RP, ranging from retired engine, to signals, to locomotive parts, to rail.

In the case of this shot (and maybe Steven's too, but I haven't seen them) they're looking for more of the cab to be shown, such as this:

Although the locomotive in the example is an active engine, it still demonstrates my point. If you were able to get a shot showing the whole cab AND have it exposed correctly, the shot would make it on. The rejected and posted shots only show a small portion of the cab, and the lighting if fairly unbalanced. They're interesting, but not what RP is looking for.

Take a look at the tagged "in-cab" photos on RP. I few plain control stand shots slip in now and again, but look at the vast majority of the photos. http://www.railpictures.net/showphotos.php

In my opinion, plain shots of just the controls are getting a bit cliche at RP, and I think the screeners are starting to feel the same way. RP is probably looking for either exceptionally exposed shots of the controls, something showing the entire cab, or something new and fresh. For example:

This shot shows the entire control stand, the lighting is evenly balanced, and it has other interesting elements that add to the image. It's not "great", but it does give a general example of what RP is looking for.

Let me rephrase what I said, pretty much any non-operational locomotive cab-shot will be PEQ. You made your point for the retired ones, signals, etc.. I didn't mean for my comment to sound the way you took it. Should have been clearer. The thing that gets me is how a picture of a piece of rail isn't PEQ. Maybe it's just me, but I have no interest in that.

Heh. Yeah - I'm pretty sure I've got a shot somewhere taken from a bridge looking down at some medium sized dead animal - 1/2 on one side of the rail and 1/2 on the other side after obviously being sliced by a wheel. Pehaps I should upload that and see if they'll take it?

I tried a shot of a dead deer with a bunch of vultures on the tracks two years ago, and it was rejected.
