19:13 EST: E945 clear on a pair at Elmdale. Also, sounds like Q334 has an NS leader...
19:20 EST: E945 clear...Alto? Really staticy.
19:24 EST: Q334 east, restricting Lamar. Main 1 to 2 track. Sounds like they grabbed their power over there.
19:27 EST: E945 clear Snow Road.

E945 all by Seymour at 2006.
As long as I am remember right the cabeese were CO 904016 and BO 904216.

If I had read the thread first I would have paid closer attention. Heard they held for a minute at trowbridge. CN had the diamond. Was able to pick up the little one and catch 945 just in time. Should have readied the camera.

945 & 334 did battle at Oakland. I didn't get 334's numbers, I'd appreciate if someone got them, including a car count.

Cabooses are correct, but 4216 was leading 4016.

Edit: Y297 released their EC-1 from Fuller to Turner St at 20:25.

Reading between the lines here, and checking my caboose records (and is why I keep records like this) the cabs should have been C&O cab 904126, last seen by me on 2-15-98, and last known to be in Saginaw in Nov. 2003. The B&O Caboose should have been 904016, last seen by me on 2-13-98 (only two days earlier than the other one) and last known to be in Bay City in Oct. 2003. THANKS ALEX!!!

Hey, Bob: Want more? I've got CSXT 904091 at Wealthy & Market in Grand Rapids. Moved 2 blocks after 334 & 945 to see 297 come south, and there's ANOTHER CABOOSE!!

In regards to your dates, to put it another way, they last went by you about 1 month before I was born!

30 minutes, 3 cabooses. I'm HAPPY! :D :D

It only gets better on these cabs on E945 tonight. Checking my daily log sheets from 1998. Thes two cabs went east to Flint on train Q336 (Chi-Flint train) two days apart, and long after cabs ceased to exist on the rear of trains. B&O 904016 was on Q336 on 2-13-98, while C&O 904126 went east to Flint two days later on 2-15-98. Just a tad over 15 years later, they both return back to GRP on the same day on an BNSF Essexville coal empty.

Evidently, these two cabs went to Flint-Saginaw-BayCity for use there, and there time is now up.

What will happen to these cabeese? Will they be used in Grand Rapids, Chicago, or for scrap?

According to scanner traffic, they're staying in GRR for use here and also in Holland. I think they've wrecked 1 or 2 in the last year or so, so they might be replacing those. I think there is currently 1 or 2 cabs in Holland, and 2 or 3 in Grand Rapids.

Not gonna have the videos up until the weekend, but for now, here are pictures of the cabooses, plus CSX 2680 from a low angle:

This actually brings up a good point....what is the current caboose situation in the western half of Michigan on CSX these days??

Around the midde of the last decade, the picture was something like this:

2 Wyoming 903101, 904151
1 Lansing Ensel 903109
1 Muskegon 904015
1 Ludington 903158
1 Benton Harbor 904034
1 Holland 903318

Since then, 904151 has been bad ordered (I think) at GR, 903109 came to GR, 904015 went to Holland, 903318 came to GR, 903158 was sold to MQT and repainted and is used in Ludington/Manistee. 903101 is still in GR and I don't know where 904034 ended up. Are there any corrections to this? Which cabs have been bad ordered/disposed of as of late?

I can confirm both 904016 and 904126 were in active service in Saginaw as of August 25, 2000. I also saw them each active there on August 21, 2002. Also in Saginaw at the time were a pair of Chessie wide-visions, retired, and as of 1999 one of the last former C&O center cupula ACF types, which was then donated to the Saginaw Valley RR Museum.

Is that CSX painted 904091 in regular service out of Grand Rapids now?

Not the best quality, but:

I'll have to check the number tomorrow if I can find it, but there was definitely still a Chessie cab rolling around Ensel as recently as a few days ago. My sight line to its usual parking spot has been blocked by a bunch of tank cars for most of the week. There was also a Seaboard covered hopper hooked up to it about a month or so ago, but that has been moved.

They went west on D700 this morning. Caught them in New Richmond so perhaps they are just along for the ride and one of them will be dropped off in Holland on the return trip.

Couldn't get a very good angle, but my best guess on the Chessie caboose currently in Ensel is 903320.
