CN Train Location Updates - January 2024

Amtrak 350 and 354 canceled today. 352 is forty five minutes late departing Chicago because of the usual "equipment" problems. And, of course, 355 is canceled too. So one Wolverine so far today, maybe that is it. Pathetic. Freight trains are running just fine. Didn't Amtrak just get $25 billion too? They are worse now after the money.

17:35 - WB M399 with CN 8825/CN 8891/CN 2306 thru Durand on M2

SB 515 past MP 22.5 at 7:57 am.

Amtrak sent an extra trainset with 354 last night, running 2.5 hours late into Pontiac. Train 351 left Pontiac 35 minutes late this morming. Train Status is showing a "service disruption" for 353 this morning. No surprise there.

07:47 - WB M399 with CN 2317/CN 2562 thru Durand on M2 - no P365 today so easy dispatching.

M394 was combined into today's A492.

08:01 - WB Z149 thru Durand on M2 with CN 8936/CN 5736 - stacks and racks today

251 passing MP 22.5 at 10:53 am. Missed the power. Short train, mostly NICX, NCIX and similarly lettered grain cars, very few autoracks. Where have all the autoracks gone lately?

Those are all plastics hoppers. And yes, definitely wondering if CN lost some lanes of traffic on the autorack biz.

Q116 was thru Griffith, IN at 08:48 eastern so very late today. Sounds like there's a lot of cold-weather issues plaguing the yards and tracks in and around Chicago.

12:08 - NB/WB E251 with CN 5791/CN 8962 thru Durand on the Chicago Wye - one of the newer CSX/GATX white hourglass autoracks where CSXT reporting marks are on the actual car is on the head end
12:24 - WB U713 with CN 3077 solo up front, an empty ethanol train with buffer cars, CN 2953 nose-in mid-DPU and then a cut of empty autoracks on the tail end thru Durand on M1.

Also, FYI, the Charlotte Livestream Cam is back up after a 2-day outage due to the internet provider being down.

L520 - South Bend to Battle Creek - has CN 5286/CN 5246 today

Grain train currently in Durand. Power move out of Flint yard took the High Wye and backed through the Holly sub into the yard.

1:20 PM Grain train pulled through south out of the yard and is now currently backing up onto the High Wye. When they clear, they will continue westbound

This was WB G882 with CN 2938/CN 3342. That pair was on M382 on 01/08 and M383 on 01/07.

Back of the napkin soybean math:

This train was a mix of car types but I saw a few FCA 5200s so we will base our math around that car type.

5200 cu ft * 50 lb/cu ft for soybeans = 260,000 lbs
260,000 lbs of syobeans is 4,333.33~ bu/car
4333.33 bu * $12.31 (market price on Sunday) = $53,343.29/car
$53,343.29/car * 100 cars = $5,334,329 in soybeans.

Amtrak on the Holly Update: 353, which should have left Pontiac around 9 am, is still "delayed" at the station for a "service disruption." Amtrak 350 was out of Chicago was canceled. Amtrak 355 out of Pontiac is still listed as running this afternoon.

15:33 - Q116 with CN 8894/CN 2671 by the Charlotte CN Livestream camera at MP 204.4

Amtrak 355 scheduled out of Pontiac at 5:30 pm says it is leaving on time. We will see. There should be a trainset there from 354 last night.

i think i counted 67 double stacks and 6 single stacks on today's Q116.

16:15 - WB/SB L508 is taking the High Wye in Durand with a pair of CN on the head end.

Should be an interesting mess with L508 and L507 both potentially beating Q116 to Moterm.

507 rolling past MP22.5 at 5:12 pm with three locomotives and about a dozen freight cars, some empty well cars and a fair number of containers on the rear.

We have an Amtrak on the Holly. 355 left Pontiac on time with a Genesis on the headend and a P42 shoving on the rear. Expecting 116 and 508 to follow it down the Hill.

What seemed to be a lite locomotive just went SB past MP 22.5. I missed seeing it but heard it. Let's say it is a SB 513 thrown into the SB Holly Mix this evening. No 116 or 508 yet.
