45 years, that's alot of log books. I wasn't even born in 1964. I have met some very nice police in Fostoria. Don't get me wrong. I'm not implying all Fostoria police are jerks. All cities have their police who think their Rambo and just because they wear a badge, think they can harass people. Some people have written and said that the locals don't like railfans. In my 10 years going to Fostoria, I've never had a problem with the locals. They may look at you a little funny but thats about it. Thanks for the heads up on the parking at Columbus Ave. Next time I go to Fostoria I'll have to park there. I always go for the weekend because I drive down from Detroit. I always stay at the Country Club Inn (formally Days Inn) right there across from the Norfolk Southern tracks. Take Care.

Hi there

As a complete Newbie to this site, I find your comments about Deshler and Fostoria really interesting and very useful. I am coming across the pond to Ohio next May, and have a DVD showing both Deshler and Fostoria together with Willard.

I plan to travel to all three and take loads of pictures and films.

So thanks for your comments, they are very useful to me.

Deshler is safer than Fostoria, I suppose (although I don't feel in any great danager when in Fostoria). Crossroads Park is not a "camp-ground" per-se, but there is plenty of open grassy-area to camp. There is a gravel parking lot and a small pavillion with picnic tables. The only electricity is at the pavillion (I think there's 2 outlets?) and there is also another outlet by the shed. Other than that, just the porta-crapper...no shower facilities or anything like that.

Actually it pays to stay alert to your surroundings regardless of the location.

While in Fostoria last month I didn't feel I was in any danger in fact I felt completely relax..

I've never had problems with Fostoria, just keep your eyes open. The worse I've ever dealt with are a homeless guy who wanted to know where the salvation army was. DOen plenty of 24 hours there, never had anyone bug me. Most of the time I'm driving around to much for anyone to bother me.
The dispatcher is cool.

FOSTORIA HAS A MAJOR DRUG PROBLEM [ALONG WITH HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT] AND A LOT OF CRIME RELATED TO BOTH.
AS FOR PROBLEMS FOR RAILFANS-I HAVEN'T SEEN OR HEARD OF ANY AND THERE IS A BIG POLICE PRESENCE AROUND THE TRIANGLE AREA.
BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS AND BE ALERT AND YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS.

I PREFER THE DESHLER AREA OVER FOSTORIA.

I guess Im a little different then some, because being in the hood doesn't bother me much at all, as long as you are doing something you shouldn't be preoccupied with the neighborhood.

Too many people get worried about these types of places, but I ask why? I was in the Southside of Chicago this June, and am going back there early Aug. (along with Lafayette, IN), and besides one incident where I had what seemed like a mentally ill homeless person yelling at me for no reason (that was interesting!), I never felt threatened at all. And the Southside sports some of the worst hoods in the general Midwest vicinity! It was definately an experience I was happy to have, showing the projects and general conditions of such a place, It really made me appreciate how great Minnesota is.

So, like others have said, don't ignore a place just because of the people who inhabit the area, its not always as bad as (pardon me for this) scared white people seem to make it. Yes, I am white, but Im just talking about the general consensus that so many have of the places where whites are the minority.

Go to Fostoria!
