Since the majority of traffic is coal, whenever. I'm not entirely sure of the times of the two symbol freights, 380 and 381, if they even have set times that they leave either Dickinson or Columbus. I've heard them in Columbus any time of day.

Actually, freight is the majority traffic and just the daily 380/381 pair which for the most part is nocturnal in Ohio at least. Coal used to make up much of the traffic but now coal traffic is down to 1 to 2 per week for the most part and just loads. Haven't seen or heard of an empty train going via the Secondary for quite awhile.

380 is on duty Watkins late afternoon/early evening Sunday-Thursday, on duty Hobson around 5AM-7AM Monday-Friday. Usually has one 6-axle unit and 20-40 cars; stone for metals plant at Alloy, cement for Nitro, chemicals in tanks and covered hopper, empty scrap metal gons, loaded gons with pipe, occassional UP reefer for Charleston. 380 switches grain operation at Thurston

381 on duty Dickinson 630AM Tuesday-Saturday, on duty Hobson around 5PM Tuesday-Saturday. Usually one 6-axle unit and 20-40 cars; empty stone hoppers and cement covered hoppers, loaded gons of scrap, chemicals in tanks and covered hoppers.

Tuesday through Thursday 380 & 381 usually meet at Thurston or Corning and Tuesday-Friday they also meet at Nitro

NS ran three coal trains on the WV Secondary last week, a 698 on November 29, 866 on December 2, and another 698 on December 3-4. The November 29 698 had NS 1005 as the leader. I have not seen an empty train go this way in months.

Coal trains usually come out of Dickinson with 2 units, and get 2 unit helper out of Hobson which pushes to Thurston and then returns south.

Ohio Central runs between New Lex and Burr Oak Mine.

The 380 is notable because it needs to back up out of Watkins onto the Secondary, with the conductor hanging off the rear.

bbe125 - I am one of those that love to read detailed reports about railroad operations. The more detail the better. Thanks for posting. I hope to see more of your stuff in the future :)

NS has a somewhat rare daytime coal train out of Hobson about 1030AM headed for Columbus on the WV Secondary.

NS 696, road power NS 8065 & 1047, 99 loads/0 mty 14185 tons, J6R helper NS 2752 & 6574.

Helpers usually cutoff at Thurston and return to Hobson

I know what I'll be doing on Thursday, any idea what time this train might arrive back at Watkins?
