The New (and Improved) Q109

Unread post by CG Tower »

Q109-12 shows profiled in the "magic box" for CSX customers...the 8 hour round trip seems pretty aggressive, but, a good run for the crew if all goes well. In and out at NWOC is scheduled for one hour.

Looked like some padding in the transit time to/from but the hour turnaround at North Balt seems agressive. To make that happen they'd need to get in, drop their train, get right on the return train and go (which is certainly possible, but many things could make that take longer than an hour!)

Timing wise - with the "planned" 06:30 out on the return it could be a good summer morning train on the Toledo Branch and east to Marion. We'll just have to see how things go...

Lead engine? No idea, that's just the basic version. Not sure what the power will be.

As it stands right night, Q106 is going to be due into MED at 2230. Q107 will be due out at 0001. So, either the inbound power is flipping right back out the same day, or its still going to be laying over a day. If its going to be laying over a day, there is definitely enough time for a Q109 crew to use the KCS power to NWO and back without impacting Q107's departure time. Engines aren't just sitting around, even though you're paying HP Hours, and you don't need an additional set of CSX motors.

That small window at MED is curious, I guess they must have REALLY expanded the loading area in recent years? I can remember Q106 having to set off any train in excess of 7000'. Let alone having two complete trainsets in there?

I am glad I was not the only one who thought the time window at MED was small...guess we'll see how it goes!

Q109 left MED at 00:55 after q106 arrival at 22:38. However, upon getting to Ridgeway at 01:30, things must have gone south. Looks like they got stabbed by Q131 and who knows what else..as they just were into NWOC at 6:20 this morning.

Update: They made their turn out of NWOC and were heading back south by 7:25....now currently carrying the mail down the Toledo Branch...

The running time on Q10913 was very photo-friendly - anyone know what the power was?

Thanks,
Michael

Just as I suspected. The two CSX motors on Q109-13 left on Q107. It appears that the inbound Q106 power is now getting in cycle to run on the Q109. So, for right now, look for KCS units on Q109-14 tomorrow. You all can go make sweet choo-choo loving to it on Valentines Day.

Here's a shot of Sunday's Q109 rolling up the Branch on the north side of Findlay:

This new schedule will work pretty well for pictures - now just to catch it with some Belles.

Starting April 22 Q109 will run three and half hours later with arrival at North Baltimore 12:30 and departure 13:30 For Marion. The reason behind this Q015 and Q016 will also work North Baltimore starting on April 22.

CSX's Q015 and Q016 run between Bedford Park,Il and Chambersburg,Pa. CSXI was to have started service to western connections and Louisville 2 days ago.

Has anybody seen 'em sneak by?

It also begs the question, did they carry double stacks?

Does this train run on Saturdays? Going to be in Marion this coming Saturday and curious if I'll have a chance to see this train run or not.

I caught Q109 north and southbound along the Toledo Branch on Sunday April 21. The northbound run came through Findlay at 9:20 AM with a good sized train. Saw it come back southbound through North Findlay at 11:55 AM, again with a lengthy train, but a lot of empties. Had 2 CSX GE's. On Monday morning, I heard the dispatcher tell the southbound local that he would have plenty of time to set out a car at Hantech (south side of Findlay) since Q109 hadn't shown up yet at Ridgeway, and this was about 8:45 AM.
