Plant Closing in Dayton

This GM distribution center is located at the end of the CSX former D&U industrial track, on the far west side of Dayton. The facility didn't generate a huge amount of traffic, but its closing will still be a significant loss for the local economy.

I saw that in the Dayton Daily News yesterday. I wondered if this GM/Syncreon facility actually generated traffic. At least it's a fairly new (2008) building, and could end up being sold to another rail user.

Never noticed they actually built the warehouse until now. That's a bummer. Dayton unfortunately is just a dead zone for GM compared to what it used to be. Here's a comparison WHIO did of GM related jobs today versus 2005:

In 2005, there were at least seven General Motors associated manufacturing plants in Dayton. Today, there are only two. The plants and how many employees they had in 2005:Delphi plant, 3100 Needmore Road, 1,400 employees Delphi plant, 2000 Forrer Blvd., 1,000 employees Delphi plant, 480 N. Dixie Drive, Vandalia, 600 employees Delphi plant, 3535 Kettering Blvd., Moraine, 1,000 employees Delphi Thermal & Interior, 250 Northwoods Blvd., Vandalia, 200 employees*DMAX, 3100 Dryden Road, Moraine, 1,080 employees*GM Moraine Assembly Plant 2601 Stroop Road, 4,100 employees.* Still open

Saw the new Hollywood racino at Needmore on Saturday. Odd to see it there.... At least Cargill is still generating lots of traffic. What railroad are the black cov hoppers I saw sitting at Needmore, one looked to be inside Cargill also?

Dayton is just a dead zone, period.

Yes, the new racino is thriving. I was working on the day it opened, and we got to watch the doors open live from the across the yard. It may be an odd sight, but as you know, a similar juxtaposition exists in Columbus with the same brand of casino next to the Camp Chase yard.

The black hoppers are part of Cargill's fleet, and are used for a new line of gluten feed.
