Some questions about railfanning in Ohio
First, a preface. I've been to Ohio a few times. Man, it's a great state to railfan in. I've spent time in Mingo Jct, Alliance, Berea, Brewster, Spencer, Elyria, and Wellington. I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
How much traffic does the CSX New Castle Sub host now a days?
How much traffic could one expect between Bowerston and Jewett on the old Panhandle line W&LE and Columbus and Ohio River use?
When was the Old B&O Route between Wheeling and Cleveland abandoned south of Uhrichsville?

Re: Some questions about railfanning in Ohio
About 4-6 on the W&LE a day east of Brewster, 2 on the OHCR.
The line south of Uhrichsville was abandoned in 1992 I believe?

Thank you.
Hopefully I can go spend a day between Bowerston and Jewett this summer.

Re: Some questions about railfanning in Ohio
CSX New Castle Sub is waay down from what it was before Mega PSR. If you want action on CSX I suggest Greenwich, where the CSX Big Four mainline crosses New Castle Sub. 75 percent of the trains here are on the Big four mainline or turning onto it. Lots of action. Easily 50 trains a day through this interlocking. But referring to the New Castle Sub I think 20 trains a day seems right. Some symbols I can think of use this line are listed below
CSX I015
CSX I016
CSX I135
CSX I136
CSX I137
CSX I138
CSX Q332
CSX Q331
CSX Q216
CSX Q217
and probably some more I am forgetting. I just cannot keep up with these constant changes CSX makes anymore. But roughly 10-20 trains a day use the New Castle sub. Like I said you are better off in Greenwich where a ton of CSX traffic can be viewed

Re: Some questions about railfanning in Ohio
Thank You very much. Yes, Greenwich Oh is definitely on my to railfan list, a priority even . I've heard one can catch a couple W&LE trains if they're lucky running. That would be the Carey Sub, if I'm not mistaken which I could be. The Hartland sub goes through Wellington. I caught a W&LE manifest up in Wellington.
Re: Some questions about railfanning in Ohio
There's a 99% chance you won't see anything from the W&LE there between 10 am and 6 pm although during peak stone season(now), the Wheeling usually runs between 4-6 a day through there.Anti Social Railfan wrote: ↑Thu Mar 31, 2022 8:08 pmThank You very much. Wow! Okay, thanks.
What could one expect to catch in Spencer Oh?

Mid-week days are generally busier, Spencer normally sees a 222, 221, 661, 662, 711, 712, 732, 735, 238, 237 daily plus any extras.Anti Social Railfan wrote: ↑Fri Apr 01, 2022 9:54 amWow! Okay, thanks.

Re: Some questions about railfanning in Ohio
And I did, the 14th and 15th. It was a rather hastily planned outing but went well/
On the way up I (the 13th) caught 4 trains in the Bluefield WV area on the Ex N&W mainline. I spent most of that day letting my puppies sniff new ground. They had a ball.
On the 14th I caught a lot of NS at Elyria. I also caught a CSX local on the Old B&O line.
On the 15th i spent the day back and forth between Spencer and Wellington. I caught a slew of CSX and a couple W&LE manifests.
I caught a lot of trains, puppies sniffed a lot of new ground. It was a great trip. The drive is tough though, a once or twice a year thing. If i do go back this year, It'll be spent on the east side.

Re: Some questions about railfanning in Ohio
Anyone know what was going on in Queensgate tonight? Sounded like multiple lines in were shutdown and the yard was accepting zero trains. If I heard the dispatcher correctly on the scanner. She was NOT happy at all.

Re: Some questions about railfanning in Ohio
Of course the dispatcher would know nothing about that

Re: Some questions about railfanning in Ohio
I think in the beginning couple hours she wasn’t getting much info and was incredibly agitated because of that. I remember her asking the engineer to get info from the conductor who had walked back to the issue and to find an ETA to move again. Obviously this wasn’t moving and the scope of that wasn’t clear. Couldn’t blame her for being annoyed.

Re: Some questions about railfanning in Ohio
As for the WLE Carey Sub traffic has picked up a bit as an NGL propane transfer facility located online near Sycamore last year.
Exit stage left
Re: Some questions about railfanning in Ohio
They get about 2-5 cars a day and the traffic is handled by existing trains.
