Unread post by MSchwiebert »

Have arrived and may be put in at the same time as the new ones that are awaiting installation in Deshler (early June) they are conventional (not OWLS).

Last time they replaced the diamond, it was on a Monday right after one of our first meets in Fostoria. I hope they aren't planning on this install on either June 12th or 13th.

YEAH! I am glad to hear this...it means that CSX (or someone else) may have a long term plan of this line.

Or maybe it's like painting the depot they're about to tear down.

The only reason the NoBalto Depot was painted was to get on the cities good side anyway. It served it's purpose.

I'll post some pics of the diamonds over the weekend, they're a pretty impressive piece of pre-fab work! As for the N.Baltimore dépôt, the paint was certainly a case of "putting lipstick on a pig" especially compared to the condition of the inside.

This might be slightly off topic, but I have a quick question: which company(s) make things like this? Are they the same ones that make normal rail, or are there different manufacturers for frogs and crossings?

I believe, and may be wrong, that there is only one place in the US still producing specalized castings for frogs and diamonds. Each diamond is a 'special order' because the track spacing (double track), angle, etc are all different. This is why if a diamond 'breaks' its not an over night fix. Anyway, I thought the place doing it was located in Cleveland, OH. Of course, I could be wrong, and I bet 'farmer' knows for sure.

I'm fairly certain one member of this forum knows 'farmer' pretty well. He usually posts information from him for us.

There were mfg tags and barcode stickers all over the components, but I didn't take notes as to what mfg's name was on it. I could find out though :-)

If you're in the area anyway, it would be awesome, but it's not worth more than 5 minutes of time. Thank you :)

The last time the diamonds at Deshler were replaced it was on a Monday and another diamond was OOS that day also. (I want to say it was St. Joe)

I was down that way yesterday and the Galatea diamonds were made by Nortrak .

http://www.voestalpine.com/nortrak/en.html

The unit was entirely assembled and awaiting it's lift into place. CSX had a normal backhoe and a John Deere Front End Loader there - but no crane yet. I'd suspect that the replacement is going to happen in the next week or two.

They also have a set of new diamonds in Attica waiting to go in.

I was at Galatea on Saturday. Saw the diamonds built and sitting on the North-West side of the diamonds. There was also about 10 loads of ballast placed right behind the front loaders. Also there was a CSX crew welding on both of the diamonds as well.

It's probably time at Attica. The last time they were replaced was late October 2007. Greenwich has repair parts ready to be installed as well.
