H792 Derails, Conductor Injured

Unread post by cbehr91 »

According to COHRailfan, CSX local H792 was switching in the siding at Morral when a gondola derailed possibly due to ice buildup at a grade crossing. The conductor on the train was apparently riding on the car and either jumped for safety or fell when the car derailed and had to be taken to the hospital. The derailment did foul the main and at least one train, possibly two, are being held in Fostoria as a direct result.

Is this close to fostoria?

Its in between the E/E Harpster and the W/E Double Track at Acton just outside of Marion. MP 55 of there a bouts.

Hope the guy is ok, but if that gondola is empty, its not going to look good on him. Not supposed to shove empty cars over crossings that may be fouled by ice and/or snow. Rule book says to use the engine to cut the flange ways to avoid derailing light cars. I know at MED one night we never left because MOW had to come burn out the flange ways in the crossings inside the ramp. No way were we going to shove intermodal cars over ice up flangeways.

...or at the very least, precede the move on foot at less than walking speed. After the ice storm we had in Ohio, though, being on foot may be even more hazardous. Some people don't believe that empties will derail on heavy ice (or even freeze to the rails) but they do. If you are lucky to catch it in time you can back up and rerail yourself. It's even more stressful when you're working in a plant where all of the trackage is in the pavement.

.......happened to me on thurs nite. Mt hoppers for St Marys Cement. Stopped at the crossing, put out the fusees, loose snow, looked ok. About half way across walked right off the rail. Was able to walk'em right back on. No sweat ( well mabe a little  ). Crossing was on a curve, pavement was plowed and dry. But still just enough to derail the cars.
