Q122/Q123 via the Columbus Line

Unread post by PowellWye »

At present Q122-06 is attempting to make its way from the Van Yard at Buckeye toward CP-Hocking and on up the Columbus Line to Galion. This is the the first stack train to be routed this way since CSX lowered the track under High and Front Streets this spring. Normal routing is via Ridgeway and Marion to Galion.

Glad I said attempting in the last post, as it appears they backed Q122 from Mounds past CP-Buckeye toward the Van Yard and took them north via the Scottslawn toward Ridgeway once again. Another case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing at CSX once again.

Q122-07 was the first train to run over the Buckeye Line and up the Columbus Line, they made it across today and didn't hit any bridges :) So start watching for 122/123 on the Columbus Line again.

Figures, I've had the A/C on because of the heat the last week or so, I must've missed hearing the horn at 5th Ave if they came by.

On a side not, CSX had a loaded coal train in Goodale Yard today on the Buckeye Line, apparently it backed up through Dennison Switch, then when I arrived it rolled out in a hurry towards the Columbus Line. My guess is a bad engine, and they needed a restart not involving the connection off the C&O north of Scioto.

They needed to make a run for the hill. And their second engine was not working properly.

Thanks Cory, that was my guess exactly, I posted a picture and elaborated in the CMH Report after posting here, neither of us had a scanner with us, which is why we weren't sure.

So approximately what time have Q122/123 been in and out Buckeye Yard? By Brandon's pic, I would guess Q122 has been leaving around 6-7am. I know I would see Q123 in Marion late in the afternoon, is it coming into Buckeye Yard after dark?

I believe Q122 is to be out of Buckeye before 0600. Coming the other direction, Q123 is due around 1630, but of course this is widely variable depending on what kind of run it has had getting here from Syracuse.

I fanned Q123 going down the Buckeye Line today. (Sorry, no pictures or video. Just the ones in my head. :D )

The crews must love running those two trains because they have to stop and flag all 5 crossings between CP-Hocking and CP-Buckeye.

What time did it come through? I didn't hear it all day but just left for an hour around 4:30-5:30, did I miss it then?

Are they not blowing the horn at the crossings that they flag? I don't know how I could've missed them crossing 5th Ave today if I was home. I do still have the A/C going, I'm gonna have to leave the scanner on all afternoon tomorrow, I want to get a shot of it on the Scioto River bridge.

They blew the horn both before they stopped and let the conductor off and while they were crossing the crossing with the conductor flagging.

You have to rise early to catch the Q122, usually it departs around 6am. The Q123, if running on time should be down there around 1430, but like it was stated in a earlier reply the times can vary depending on it's run from Syracuse. The stop and flag orders should be done soon, once so many trains run over the Buckeye line they can remove the rusty rail conditions. I had Q122 the other day, it sure is nice flying up the hill compared to slugging it out at 8mph or less on a coal train :). Q279 ran down the columbus line, they went via the NS Dayton District then up the Scottslawn due to a tie gang working at Marion.

I don't think I've ever been so excited to see a CSX intermodal train in my life!

CSX 5369, 7384, & 7710 with Q123 at Trabue Road on the Buckeye Line at 3:00pm. They had to call the dispatcher because the engineer could not see the signal at CP Mounds, and they wanted to make sure they were clear before they flagged the crossing.

I hear that the high car detector at CP-Mounds has been turned back on. It nabbed Q123 for high cars which no longer exceed the clearance restrictions the detector is calibrated for.

Although today I had Q122 and it didn't go off at all, so wether it works or doesn't it seems like were always inspecting our trains. Also the stop and flag orders for every crossing probably will never get removed until NS starts running van trains down the buckeye line. It's a long 6 miles from Buckeye to downtown.

What about Leonardsburg detector? That one also has an HCD. Has it been going off for the new "stacked" trains as well?
