Railfanning in Indy

Where are some good places to catch the action. How many trains, safe neighborhood etc.

Where-a-bouts exactly, Indy is a fairly decent sized metropolis? Downtown is pretty quiet, and safe, for a big city. There is a parking garage that overlooks CP IU. That gives you access to most of the moves through town.

If you want to see yard moves, Gable Drive off US 36 dead ends to the tracks at the Mainline Fuel Pad at Avon. Just stay back from the 'fence line' and you'll be safe. Expect some funny looks from the car inspectors as they drive past. Scanner set to 58-58 will give you 'heads up' to trains departing east or west. US 36 follows the tracks between I-465 and Danville, though public crossings are limited between Avon and downtown.

Not trying to steal ~Z~'s thunder, but indianarailroads.org would have more specific information, and I'm sure there are directions to most 'hot spots' already posted there.
