PARKING AT OWOSSO

Unread post by sp4380 »

Any suggestions on where to park?
I will be heading up Thursday afternoon.

Also, any idea when the 4449 will return from the all day trip?

Thanks, Terry

Wherever you can find a spot  . In all seriousness, expect hell with parking. Bring a bike?

That was my exact thought, Jim. Just go...find the first available spot and be prepared to walk. Simple as that. :)

Type in "parking' in the search box in the upper right corner, here's one of the recent results:

Hey speaking of parking, I parked next to the tracks and somebody took out my front bumper. Did anybody see who did it.

I called Indian Trails, which is operating shuttle buses between Durand and Owosso every 20-25 minutes between the hours of 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. Durand pickup points are three: The caboose area across the tracks from the depot; Durand High School; Shiawassee County Fairgrounds. I am opting for the high school, as it is close to the M-71 exit off I-69 and will probably be less congested than the area around the caboose. It will be interesting to see if people who park at the depot will be able to get across the tracks to the caboose area to catch the bus. CN doesn't allow pedestrians to cross during RR Days anymore, so a van is used to transport people between the depot and downtown. Perhaps they will do the same thing this weekend.

JUST TALKED TO CITY OF DURAND REPRESENTATIVE---DO NOT PARK AT THE DEPOT AND CROSS THE TRACKS THERE.
THE POLICE WILL BE WATCHING !!!!!!!!!

PARKING IS AVAILABLE AT THE CABOOSE [N. SIDE OF TRACKS] WHERE THE SHUTTLE LEAVES FROM.
ALSO, PARKING AND SHUTTLE AVAIL. AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.

TWO GOOD RESTAURANTS BY THE CABOOSE--THE IRON HORSE [MY FAVORITE :D :D :D ] AND NICKS.
GOOD EATS AT BOTH. ALSO UNCLE TONY'S PIZZA [A BLOCK W. OF CABOOSE].

WARNING--DRIVE CAREFULLY IN DURAND.A LOT OF POLICE WILL BE WATCHING YOU.

OWOSSO PARKING---LOOK AT THE AERIAL VIEWS. CITY LOTS N. OF SRI [5 TO 6 BLOCKS] WITH LOTS OF SPACES.
ALSO, A LARGE AREA JUST ACROSS THE RIVER.

I watched that news spot about the festival and heard that South Washington will be blocked off. Looked up a nice sized parking spot on the other side of the river. Maybe that'll be available?

I am actually staying in Durand and I heard the Iron Horse was good! :P

I would just get to Owosso as early as possible, that's what I plan on doing.

I never have a problem finding a place to park in East Lansing when 75,000 people show up on football Saturday. Why do people think it's going to be an issue to find somewhere to park in Owosso, which is similar in size to EL, and will be seeing a LOT fewer than 75,000 people?

EL/MSU has the benefit of doing this 6 to 8 times a year for the last 75 years. It's a pretty polished operation at this point in time. How often does Owosso see more visitors than it has residents?

I'm not talking about the people who park on campus in the controlled lots. There are thousands upon thousands of people who park around East Lansing on the streets, in city lots, etc. and walk to the stadium. The same will be occurring in Owosso, but with quite a few thousand less.

I'm looking for that time also. Anybody know? Can't find it here or on the Trainfestival website. All it says is it's heading for Alma at 9:30, with a 2-hour stop there.

Alma appears to be about 35 rail miles from Owosso, so figure about 2 hours each way? Is a runby planned?

I'm guessing a return arrival time of around 4 pm? Anyone with more "official" information?

Check this link:

http://www.themorningsun.com/articles/2 ... 750678.txt

It says that 4449 will arrive around 11:30 am, and leave at 2 PM. Filling in the blanks, it's about 2 hours each way.

Went to Trainfest yesterday Thursday, was able to park 2 block away in a city lot and never got a ticket, maybe lucky or P.D. just did not bother checking vehicles. I think we got lucky because it was raining when we arrived at 9:15 am.
Seem a few businesses close (within 4 blocks) charging $10~$15 to park.
Good luck and be prepared if they got or get more rain that it will be muddy on the grounds, it was yesterday.
Lots to see and do.

NOTE: Washington Street is closed from bridge to RR crossing.
