Welcome to CSX Predecessors, a page within the Chessie Chapter. We try to track 4617 and other predecessors movements around the system, based upon report and a number of sources. Not always the most up to date, but we try. 4617 was at Toledo in summer 2004, and Oak Yard in Detroit in spring 2005. That was the last time it was in Michigan or close. I believe it was also at Garrett in 2005 or 2006. Check out the link and feel free to join the Chessie Chapter!

I saw the unit, when I was in 10 grade, (15) now I'm 17, I was helping the Middle School Track Coach, and we were driving over to the school and the unit was going west, I kick my self in the butt for not having my camera with me. I think it was Q327.

Couple other minor corrections (and additions) for the C&O steam list:

The 1309 is at the B&O museum in Baltimore,MD

The 1308 is on display in Huntington,WV.

The 2760 is on display in Lynchburg,VA

I have pictures somewhere, but that will take a while to find...

The engines in Richmond and Logan are the only ones I havent seen yet..

Heck, she deserves to be put somewhere nice after retirement, I say a nice museum. Wonder why the paint crews have desended on her main body yet? Will be a sad day, and i think railfans would protest CSX painting her in a DF scheme. How long has she been on the road?

I believe 4617 was built in 1971, and wears her original colors of C&O blue. At one point in the 90s, part of the cab was repainted, and in 1996 (?) she got the CSX yellow noses (modified scheme). It is doubtful 4617 will ever wear CSX dark future/scheme 7 colors. CSX isn't repainting anything they don't forsee with a long future on the railroad. When it is retired, it will be in C&O Blue.

On a side note, I hope the Hoosier Valley Musuem has great success restoring their Kanawha. Certainly there are plenty of others to draw parts from :) I'd love to see it run!
