Amtrak Consists Report

With the string of cold weather, Amtraks consists on the Wolverine service have been differant day to day. Yesterdays Amtrak 350 terminated in Detroit and passengers were bused to Royal Oak and the northern suburbs. Amtrak 350 also had no rear unit on the train yesterday.

Today, I decided to go out in this cold weather and watch Amtrak #353 come into Royal Oak. Now that I am out in the Northern suburbs, this is a great new spot for me on the CN Holly Sub as Im nowhere near the NS/ Amtrak Michigan Line. 353 was right on time at about 11:27am with the following consist:

#31 P42 Genesis Amtrak Phase V (Wave)
54048 Horizon Coach Amtrak Phase V (Wave)
Image
54527 Horizon Coach Amtrak Phase III
Image
54550 Horizon Coach Amtrak Phase III
54539 Horizon Coach Amtrak Phase IV
48177 Amfleet Cafe Amtrak Phase V (Wave)
#37 P42 Genesis Amtrak Phase V (Wave)

Here is a video of Amtrak 353 departing Royal Oak, MI 2/6/07:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIZDM8yK4h4

I fing this link on Amtrak Horns to be interesting:
http://www.gobytrain.us/amtrak/notes/horns.html

I have noticed differances between locomotives. #31 has an old model K5LA and the number 3A Bell is dominant.. this you might notice in the video gives #31 a slightly differant sound. IMO it sounds like its blowing a "minor" key

To keep from pushing other threads, perhaps I can continue this one as "Amtrak Consits" and others can share reports on what equipment is being used.

Here is Amtrak #350 "The Wolverine" departing from Dearborn, MI 1/27/07 with NPCU #90200 in the lead:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPfS2vnhFYo

Enjoy the videos, I like the Royal Oak one from Today, lots of horn on the departure! Anyone seen 90200 lately?

Amtrak Consist update 2-7-07

Unread post by Mackinac Mac »

Today, I decided to go out in this cold weather AGAIN and watch Amtrak #353 come into Royal Oak, just to see how the consitst are faring in this weather.

353 had an on-time departure from Pontiac at 11:05am and was running about 20 minutes late into Royal Oak due to a signal maintainer on the line and departed at 11:45am on the far-track with the following consist:

Image
#27 P42 Genesis Amtrak Phase V (Wave)
Image
48181 Amfleet Cafe Car Amtrak Phase V (Wave)
54542 Horizon Coach Amtrak Phase V (Wave)
54536 Horizon Coach Amtrak Phase IV
54501 Horizon Coach Amtrak Phaase V (Wave) [Custon Class]

Amtrak #353 finally arrived at Chicago, IL at 7:12 pm:
2 hours and 31 minutes late.

Here is a video of Amtrak #353 at Royal Oak today:

Awesome video and photos! Genesis #27 is really looking good. Some ITCS equipped units, #30 and #32, for sure, #29 now with it's shot traction motors, and some F40 cabs, sure look trashy. I always wonder what the general non-railfan public must think when they see the Amtrak go by with stripes peeling off or dents in the nose or scrapped up paint on the side.

Cool they did not have a rear unit. They came through Kalamazoo around 4:15, I could see them from class. 4:15 is about an hour and 15 late, so they must have lost more time elsewhere. Great Report Mackinac Mac!

Consist Update 2-8-07

Unread post by Mackinac Mac »

Today, I observed Amtrak #350 and #355 come into Royal Oak, just to see how the consitst are faring in this weather after a 3 day abscence from the northern suburbs.

350 arrived at 3:46 pm and was running almost 1 hour late into Royal Oak. I was suprised to see two available diesels used on this normally "short" train.

355 arrived at Royal Oak at 4:54 pm, only 4 minutes late and was estimated to arrive about 30 minutes late into Chicago around 10:30 pm this evening. Todays Consist for 350 / 355 was the following, Pontiac facing end first:

#37 P42 Genesis Amtrak Phase V (Wave)
54049 Horizon Coach Amtrak Phase V (Wave) [Business Class]
54535 Horizon Coach Amtrak Phase IV
54574 Horizon Coach Amtrak Phase V [CoachClass]
58006 Horizon Dinette Amtrak Phase IV [Cafe]
#30 P42 Genesis Amtrak Phase V (Wave)
[logo absent from nose of #30, side numbers and wave logo are faded]

Enjoy!

P.S. If anyone sees an NPCU soon, let me know.
Also, is Amtrak now labeling all Horizon Dinettes "Cafe" in the Phase V paint? I can't say that Cafe would be incorrect.

Cool. I haven't seen many NPCU's here since that accident in jackson between #90218 and that semi. Maybe, they are afraid of losing another one. But, most of thme are now in Phase 5... they look awesome!

Amtrak 351 was westbound about a half hour late this morning. Here is what they looked like:

P42 #35 (phase V)
Horizon coach 54527 (phase III)
Horizon coach 54501 (phase V)
Horizon coach 54536 (phase IV)
Horizon coach 54542 (phase V)
Amfleet I Cafe (Phase V, couldn't get the number)
NO REAR UNIT!

There have been quite a few trains run with no rear locomotive on the normally push-pull Michigan Line this last week. I guess they're finding some place to wye all these trains. Power has been negatively effected by the weather and #29 is offline with burnt up traction motors, reducing the ITCS equipped pool at this time.

Saw Amtrak 353 today in Hamtramck / Detroit at the Caniff Ave crossing. Inspired by some photos shared on this board recently, I got a great video of the train slamming through the snow drift at the crossing. Enjoy the video and sound of jointed rail!!! :

Horizon Coach Phase III
Horizon Coach Phase V
Horizon Coach Phase IV

Are you sure that's not just the snow covering everything making it look really bad?

Great Video Mackinac Mac! Good angle, nice sunlight, jointed rail and of course the flying snow :)

JT - #30 really is in rough shape on the outside. The front logo is gone (it has been for a couple years now) and the side logos/numbers are badly faded, if the sun is just right you can hardly see them they blend in so well with the gray paint, which by the way looks quite grimy too. Good modeler's project!

It looked a bit better in Sept 2005, but still with no nose logo:

Glad you all enjoyed the video. In the post from February 08th2007 (Post subject: Consist Update 2-8-07) You can see these pictures of #30 with no ice. Notice the number and Amtrak logo, look almost white.. they show up good as this was on an angle to the sun, when looking directly at them, they have no blue color and the "stickers or decals" have faded completely away to white.

Nathan, 30 never did have a front logo...they never put the decal on when it was repainted in 2005.

Sure #20219? IU thought she got Phase 5 just as her sisters #90218 (accident in jackson) and #90200.
