Funding sought for rail service

NORTHFIELD TOWNSHIP -- A coalition pushing for a temporary commuter rail service to bypass construction along U.S. 23 plans to apply for a federal grant that could fund up to 80 percent of the $2.4 million cost.

The remaining $720,000 would come from fares if the commuter rail receives 1,000 riders a day, said Eli Cooper, Ann Arbor's transportation manager.

Government and business leaders met in Northfield Township in Washtenaw County on Tuesday to move the project forward, although questions arose over the number of people who would use the rail, service hours and funding.

I think it will. Ann Arbor and several of the communities up the line from town are serious about the train option.
