As I explained to you some time ago, after one of your personal attacks, I worked for Chessie, at Rougemere, Oak, and Wixom, before it was CSX. At rougemere, I prepared a list of high value loads every morning, tires, TVs, liquor, coffee, appliances, including car numbers, and the tracks they were located in, for the rail cops to check the seals. I know exactly what rail cops duties are. I also know it is not part of their duties to hassle law abiding railfans on public property, or pull guns on kids with cameras [Ortiz] and make them delete pics taken from a public street [Dearborn Avenue]. And as I also posted in the past, there doesn't seem to be any checks on rail cops activities, or regard for peoples constitutional rights on public property. I want to emphasize all rail cops are not bad. But I have had several bad experiences with them on public property, while conducting my self in a lawful manner, and it has always been CSX cops!

Interesting, since in the first page of this thread you had no idea where the railroad police's powers were, but now you are an expert on their duties. Maybe they did have very little to do when you worked for the railroad, that was before my time, so I have little to no knowledge of their job back in the 70's. However I have talked to enough of them, or seen them in action first hand to tell you that the statement "Rail cops have little to do all day" is incorrect.

Private property is private propery, no matter who owns it. The law against trespassing makes no exceptions based on if it is owned by a person or corporation. That seems pretty apples to apples to me.

My reply wasn't about the law, it was about feelings that Clay implied ("how would you like?" as he stated) with trespassing. A corporation has no personal feelings if someone is on their property. A private land owner DOES. Again, apples and oranges. Not sure how you missed that.

We get them all the time driving through the yard, or railfans coming through the yard. Posted as no trespassing on the roads as you come in, but that doesn't stop them. Things got especially bad when a new apartment complex opened up at the west end of the yard, and those people started using the yard roads as a way to avoid US 36. You can usually tell the 'outsiders' as they pull up to the crossing gates in the yard and wait for them to come up. They only go up in an emergency, and them sitting there doesn't qualify as one.

Now that I have been taught the difference between the 'authority' of a RR cop and a rentacop, I have one question that I would like to have answered since some here have the answers and that is: What training does a RR cop get before he is handed his badge and gun and sent out to enforce the laws as he or his employer interpret them?

State police in Michigan get 16 weeks academy training, other muninciple cops get training at academies or community colleges. My question is what training does CSX give?

My reason for asking is simple, all police officers get their paycheck from the government. RR cops get their checks from a private company. Who then oversees the activites of RR cops to ensure they do not trample the rights of the public? Even though posts here show the authority of RR cops is the same as those of law enforcement officers, they are still privately employed "rent a cops" and as everyone who works for someone knows, you do what your employer wants, even if it means trampling the rights of the public.

From what I've seen, most of the CSX Police Force are ex-deputized officers or MP's. They have more than just a 'rent-a-cop' background. I don't think a 'rent-a-cop' (i.e. security guard) has the power to arrest you, do they? They can detain you, but its up to a deputy to do the actual arresting. If anything RR Police powers are broader than your local police as they can go across county and state lines while doing an investigation. I believe they are almost up to the power level of a Conservation Officer.

Anyway, most have had academy training. They try and recruit people with real world police experience. Quite a few have SWAT background from the snippets I've seen on the employee gateway. The larger cities have K-9 units, so they aren't just some 'fly by night' group. They come to CSX because it probably offers better pay and benefits then a local officer position would. We have plenty of people with law enforcement background working in the trade positions because it offered better pay and benefits.

Next time you encounter a CSX Police Officer, tell them they are just a 'rent-a-cop' and see what their reaction is. That ought to get on their good side right there.

If memory serves me correct I believe they prefer 2 + year of on the job Police/ Law Enforcement Background. I know they are required to be certified by the state of hire as a LAW Enforcement Officer.

Well, that does ease some of my concerns as to knowledge and ability. I still have issues as to private police forces being given the powers of public law enforcement officers. Specifically,where does their priorities lie.

What Pat said is basically correct. Even thought they are employed as railroad cops they have to go throught police academy training, state police or otherwise. In Michigan they have full police powers and could stop you for speeding on a public highway.However, their mission is to protect railroad property, and they pretty much hold to that.

If stopped by a 'cinder dick' be polite.It will go much farther than being argumentative.

I never questioned a rail cops training or authority. I do question them pulling guns on kids with cameras on a public street, or telling me the whole Delray area including the public street known as Dearborn avenue is railroad property and I have to leave the area!

When a rail cop on a power trip violates your rights or hassles you on a public street, what recourse do you have. Who ya gonna call? And Pat, don't bother giving me Supt Harris number again. I'm sure he will just back up whatever his cops story is! Oh, and I don't hate anyone!

I have not heard that one. I did try to get a Q200 run your way a couple of months ago, however the crew wasn't qualified out of Blue Island.
