Horn Theft

Unread post by SD80MAC »

Group, it's been brought to my attention that the Huron & Eastern recently had a black Nathan 5 chime horn stolen from one of their GP40-2Ws. If anyone sees or hears anything in regard to its whereabouts, please contact the railroad or myself (and I'll notify them) immediately. I'd like to think it wasn't a railfan who stole it but then again....

Let's not blame railfans. NO RAILFAN would EVER steal ANYTHING from ANY railroad. Railfans are all honest, God-fearing, and only looking out for the best interests of all railroads. Obviously, this diesel horn was stolen by some demented truck driver who wants a louder horn on his rig, or some little old lady who wants it on her horse and buggy for when she goes to church on Sunday to teach Sunday school. But, a railfan... NEVER!

This actually happens quite a bit. Since there is a big market for them out there, easy money for a thief.

The MAL switcher (1512) had the brass bell stolen off of it somewhere between storage in Lansing and it's new home in Detroit.

Next time you're going to buy a horn (or something else off a loco), do some checking to see where it came from and make sure it is not stolen.

I have heard that (unfortunately) most horns/ bells on the market were acquired illegally

Idk what that would be when you can buy them either new or used from the scrapper or even the railroad itself?

Most Railroads take the horns & number plates off before they're scrapped.

If you give a man a fish, he will eat for that day.

If he steals your horn, poison his pond.
