All quiet at the GRE. Must be they went deer hunting like the TSBY :) Superliners are here - 4 of them on the train this morning.

Sounds like D801 is on the move - or trying -calling Dispatch and Y121 - they want to take light power to Waverly, then to Wells.

When and why does Amtrak switch to Superliners?

Amtrak switches about this time of year due to weather. The Superliners can stand up to cold much better without freezing issues.

I always thought they did it to make me happy when I was out photographing trains, but then that was ruined when I read the real reson.

awesome statement steve about Amtrak... superliners definately do look better..look good in the snow..now, just get rid of the genesis engines, add some freight cars, and we'll be all set.

Zack....I agree about the snow. I always thought Superliners looked best when they were kicking up a cloud of snow which obscurred the end of the train.

while out on the lunch break from 1-2pm, heard D801 going west through town out towards Wells...they had no EOT on board, so i dunno what they are going to do at Wells... maybe the cars they are getting already have one?
Y121 spent from noon until 1:30 at Zeeland...watched them go across Waverly as I was near 16th St (thank you rear view mirror)
Wonder if Y121 is going to do their normal Thursday run to Hamilton.

The Horizons HEP connections are to close to the ground, which freeze, and short out. The cars were designed with a different HEP connection scheme in mind, they have 4 sets of Male connections where the typical car has 2 sets per end. The set which is normally used is about 2' above the rail, the "spare" male connector is about 6" higher and 1' closer to the center of the car. Also the vestibule doors have problems dealing with the snow and ice. The pneumatic doors will freeze closed, and the sliding exit doors will do the same, although they are not pneumatic in anyway... Consequently, the horizons, go for a vacation on the west coast until spring returns.

Do they also use the Superliner cars on Amtrak's Blue Water? Last I remember they didn't but maybe i just wasn't paying attention to it last year.

They don't use Superliners on the Bluewater or the Wolverines. I heard it had something to do with the fact that they aren't bi-directional? They may just not have enough to equip all the Michigan runs, either.

Thats somewhat true Superlioner I cars anre not bi-directional. Super II are about half and half. If Amtrak were to throw them onto one of the other two trians it would be a fairly big hassle for them to sort out the super Is from the super IIs and then go the extra step with the IIs to find the bi-directional ones. So they will just add some more horizons or amfleets onto the wolveriene and BW.

thanks, i guess that would make sense for them to not use them on those lines then.
