CN Durand Derailment
Reports indicate CN 501 derailed in Durand around midnight last night, possibly in a few places. Photo from M. Boudro of a rack on it's side.

Re: CN Durand Derailment
Amtrak 365 is not running today because of it--not as a train, anyway. Some stations at least will have buses substituted.
Re: CN Durand Derailment
Pure dumb luck it didn't take out those new bungalows or the north end of the depot.

Has anyone been close enough to see inside the rolled over car? I wonder if the automobiles got banged up or are chained down well enough to stay in place?

I bet it will effect traffic. There are yellow and red signals at Belsay and in Davison too.

Re: CN Durand Derailment
All cars are loaded with Chevy and GMC pickup trucks. Some of the doors got ripped off and automobiles are damaged. CN is rerouting via the Holly and Mt Clemens subs
Re: CN Durand Derailment
Any reroute? CSX through Howell seems a tad busier than normal, but then again I am normally not at work until after 3:30 let alone 5 pm.

Is it too early to ask about what caused the derailment?

Re: CN Durand Derailment
Even if the truck's / cars are OK. If the train car touches the ground, they are all scrapped. Insurance / liability reasons
Mark it Zero.

According to the news report I saw, they said there was something wrong with the tracks by the station. I don't know if it was the diamond that had a problem or not. At least that's what the reporter said.MQT1223 wrote:Is it too early to ask about what caused the derailment?
Re: CN Durand Derailment
Excuse my ignorance, but from which specific plant did these autos originate?

Wasn't the diamond just replaced? Last time I was there I think a new diamond was sitting waiting to be put in, a year and a half ago I'd say.GTWwatcher wrote:According to the news report I saw, they said there was something wrong with the tracks by the station. I believe the diamond was replaced longer than year or two ago. Maybe 5ish? But it should be in good shape, still. It's one of those OWLS crossings.

Re: CN Durand Derailment
It must not have been the diamond then. Must have been the tracks near the station.MQT1223 wrote:Wasn't the diamond just replaced? Re: CN Durand Derailment
Additionally, the derailment occurred east of the diamond, although cars did end up on the diamond.MQT1223 wrote:Wasn't the diamond just replaced?
