Jiffy Mix $35 Million Expansion
http://www.clickondetroit.com/business/ ... -expansion
Looks like the future of Chelsea and rail service to Jiffy Mix looks bright. Wonder how much more of a traffic increase is expected?

B44 currently serves Jiffy out of Jackson for those wondering. They go on duty in the evening and run to jiffy on an ad needed basis (which may or may not be daily at this point)

No wonder they haven't changed their packaging in 40 years that equipment is pretty old all except the shinny palletizing robot on the end.

The last I heard the local actually serves the Chelsea Grain Company more than Jiffy (Chelsea Milling Company) right now. This is as far east as the local normally goes, although I have heard they make an occasional trip to Wayne when there is a special movement needed. (Engines to and from JAIL being the last I heard of).

Still, I have to give him credit - delay a change in his business model for 20 years (and lose potential profits) until his workforce reaches retirement age, so to avoid layoffs?! Wow... tell me how many businesses these days would be that patient (and caring). For a CEO he's a saint in my book, and I'm sure all those retiring Jiffy employees should agree (they probably have pensions too, unlike yours truly).OSRR wrote:OwlCaboose2853 wrote:Michigan-based Jiffy Mix plans $35M expansion (see 20 photos)OSRR wrote:Always good news for jobs.

Re: Jiffy Mix $35 Million Expansion
After reading the article I think there could be a significant increase in the traffic to the facility. By significant increase, I mean the possibility of traffic to the plant increase in a similar range to the projected 7 times more product being produced. Why? I did not realize that Jiffy mills their own flour onsite. This means they will need to be getting much more grain inbound to make the flour onsite for the new increased business. I would if we will see any track work done around the facility or if we will see any outbound shipments from Jiffy. I don't think there has been much in the way of outbound shipments in decades from the plant. With the development of industrial sized products it is possible that those could be shipped by rail, if the plan is to increase the national reach of the company, which I have heard is a goal.
