Re: Romulus CSX Derailment
Does anyone know what train the 596 was talking to? It sounded like they were talking to another train

Yeah. The rear 10 or so cars I thinkChip wrote: ↑Sat Jan 01, 2022 1:16 pm~Z~ wrote: ↑Sat Jan 01, 2022 12:12 pmAudio from the derailment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xKQOgpdCN0
Sounds like it could have been a bad patch of rail, at least that's what the engineer suspects. I take it there was no power on the ground, just cars?
Re: Romulus CSX Derailment
Crossing the tracks at Northline Road you could see where a car(s) had been dragging on the ties between the rails. By about 2pm it seemed to be that the cars were somewhat organized or clear the mainline. I did not notice damage north of Northline Road, but I was crossing the road and driving so thats not to say they were not on the ground sooner.

Re: Romulus CSX Derailment
I was thinking Eureka, Sibley is the next signal south so that should be right about 4. Head end stopped at 96.7 according to the audio. The diamond is 94. They were 5800 feet and 14,000 tons. So some back of the envelope math says they were 1.5 miles south of the diamond at the rear.Eric Berger wrote: ↑Sat Jan 01, 2022 1:03 pmI'm thinking from the Romulus diamond to Sibley Road is closer to four miles.ns8401 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 01, 2022 12:01 pmIf it’s from the diamond area that’s nearly 2 miles.Saturnalia wrote: ↑Sat Jan 01, 2022 11:40 amNot saying it wasn’t track, but “ugly is not a defect” and trains can handle a good deal of bad surface before anything gets remotely close to happening.
Most often things are fixed well before they’re close to being a safety or speed issue because deterioration is much more of an exponential decay than a linear decline, so it’s usually far easier to just fix it up before it goes to heck in a hurry.
It’ll be interesting to find out - sounds like it may have been on the ground for awhile?
Though, if you're talking Eureka to either Sibley or the diamond, then that is about two miles.

Sounds like mid afternoon things should reopen as repairs are almost finished.
Re: Romulus CSX Derailment
It’s back open. Q510/511, Q151, and D736 are amongst some of the first trains that have been through this afternoon.LansingRailFan wrote: ↑Sun Jan 02, 2022 10:21 amSounds like mid afternoon things should reopen as repairs are almost finished.

Fire department said 20 to 30 hours for cleanup. At least it wasn't a hazmat situation, it would have been a lot longer.AARR wrote: ↑Sun Jan 02, 2022 5:54 pmSeems like they reopened it quicklyRacer wrote: ↑Sun Jan 02, 2022 4:12 pmIt’s back open.
