Amtrak 355 accident-New Buffalo
355 has apparently been involved in an accident East of New Buffalo. Details are a little sketchy, but sounds like possible injuries with fire, possibly tow truck that was struck on fire. Lakeside Road and U.S. 12

It sounds like they have three cars derailed per units on scene. They are still attempting to determine extent and severity of injuries, but I will not post any injury details.

I've been listening to the police scanner tonight.
As of 12:24am passengers were being moved to the High School for shelter.

Amtrak 351 and 353 out of Pontiac are canceled today due to "Unscheduled Track Work." I am guessing this something to do with the New Buffalo accident yesterday?
I noticed that 352 had an extra coach on it yesterday (it went past my house a bit late), probably for the upcoming holiday traffic surge. Too bad that trains are cancelled today as the Thanksgiving rush begins today. Poor Amtrak.

Re: Amtrak 355 accident-New Buffalo
why don't they call the number on that sign?
risking lives over a little embarrassment is a great choice.
"A member of the cleanup crew tells WSBT it will be at least a week to repair the track." i don't think so

This really sounds like the wreck the chief had last year hitting the dump truck in Missouri. Yet that was because BNSF doesn't know how to maintain crossings for an exceptionally fast mainline. Just curious who owns that crossing that the 355 hit? I'm asking an honest question. Was it a bad or dangerous crossing like the one the chief incident in Missouri? I don't venture to the part of Michigan much at all so I honestly have no idea.

Here is the crossing: https://www.google.com/maps/@41.7997459 ... ?entry=ttu
Curious what the speed was at impact. I'd have to guess it went into emergency a tad before impact, it is all straight track leading up to that crossing for miles, but it was dark and likely flying at the full 110 mph. I'm hoping the dashcam footage comes out on this one.
Good thing those cars stayed upright...

Amtrak owns and maintains this section of track that runs from Porter, IN to Kalamazoo, MI.CSXBOY wrote: ↑Fri Nov 17, 2023 2:36 pmThis really sounds like the wreck the chief had last year hitting the dump truck in Missouri. Re: Amtrak 355 accident-New Buffalo
After seeing the video of this accident, we are very lucky we are not discussing a deadly train wreck, rather than a derailment with track damage and a couple minor injuries. The lead locomotive actually jumps into the air, but thankfully comes down upright and didn't roll off the tracks.

Re: Amtrak 355 accident-New Buffalo
lol k
On topic now, it’s nothing short of a miracle that there weren’t more casualties from this. Very happy to hear everyone is reasonably ok given this could have easily resulted in a lot of fatalities for both passengers and crew. Curious what the impact speed was, looks like they were doing 107mph about 6 minutes before impact.
