Train derailment forces evacuation

Unread post by GTW6401 »

NANTICOKE, Ont. - Two homes were evacuated late Wednesday after a train derailment on property belonging to Imperial Oil in Nanticoke, Ont.

The derailment happened at about 10:30 p.m. and the homes were evacuated as a precaution because one of the nine tanker cars that went off the tracks was leaking gasoline. Police say no injuries were reported.

The mishap forced the closure of some roads in the area.

The train is operated by Hamilton-based Southern Ontario Railway.

Officials from the Ministry of Environment and Transport Canada will oversee the cleanup and conduct an investigation.

Wow...

Where is Nanticoke? From the mention of Imperial Oil, it sounds like it might be near Chemical Valley...which would be a lot closer to Sarnia than anything...?

Nanticoke is directly north of Erie, PA and west of Buffalo, NY. There is a coal powered generating plant there. It is serviced by lake boats. There are also some other industries there. The aerial maps are low resolution so rails are hard to see.
